The Managing Director of The Herald newspaper has disclosed that he has been convicted and sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment by Justice Isaac Addo of an Accra High Court in a case involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Swiss-based energy trading company Petraco SA.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, the journalist expressed disappointment over the court’s decision, insisting that his publication had merely reported on a petition submitted by the multinational company to state investigative institutions.
According to him, The Herald’s report was based on a petition that had been forwarded to agencies including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), and the Attorney-General’s Department.
“Justice Isaac Addo for an Accra High Court has just convicted me and sentenced me to seven days’ imprisonment in the case involving Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA. The Herald newspaper reported only on a petition filed by the multinational company with CID, EOCO, GIPC, Attorney-General etc. Ghana deserves better.”
“Journalism is not a crime,” he wrote.
