Mrs Jean Mensa, EC chairperson

General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has accused the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of disregarding laws that govern the electoral process of Ghana and acting on her own judgment.

To General Mosquito as he is popularly called, though the EC is an independent institution of State and not subject to any individual, there are existing laws of the land that the EC must abide by in discharging its duties.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Thursday, General Mosquito suggested it was important for the EC to consider the issues being raised by the NDC because they are genuine issues which, if not addressed, may affect the limited registration process.

“Jean Mensa is disregarding the law and acting on her own whims and caprices so everything she is doing is not backed by law. She is only running the Commission on guess principles,” he said.

Commenting on the decision of the EC to conduct the limited registration exercise at its district offices, General Mosquito said it is due to the budget at the Commission’s disposal.

“The duty of the EC is to guarantee the rights of every voter by getting them to register and not cost cutting, so the EC needs to make the materials accessible to the people and not for them to struggle,” he advised.
