Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, has been appointed as the new Majority Leader in Parliament following President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial reshuffle.
The appointment follows the nomination of the outgoing Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs-designate.
A statement from the Presidency said the changes form part of a ministerial reshuffle by the President and have been communicated to Parliament through the Speaker in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
As part of the reshuffle, the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has been nominated as Minister for Defence-designate.
The President also reassigned Ahmed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament and Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, to head the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
In addition, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has been nominated as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation-designate.
The nominations are subject to vetting and approval by Parliament before the nominees can officially assume their new portfolios.
The changes come in the wake of vacancies created by the deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who were among the eight people killed in the military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
James Agalga’s appointment as Majority Leader is expected to ensure continuity in the leadership of the Majority Caucus as Parliament prepares to consider the President’s latest ministerial nominations.
