The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has declared his readiness to contest for the National Chairmanship of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) if the party’s current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, decides not to seek re-election.

According to Mr Vanderpuye, he would not contest against Mr Asiedu Nketia out of respect for their long-standing relationship, describing the NDC chairman as a senior figure he deeply admires.

He noted, however, that he would be prepared to step forward should the position become vacant.

The former Youth and Sports Minister cited his vast experience within the NDC as a major qualification for the role, stressing that he has served the party in various capacities since its formation.

He recalled serving as a ward secretary during the establishment of the NDC in 1992 while working with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), adding that his political journey has seen him rise through the ranks as a parliamentary aspirant, deputy minister, cabinet minister, and campaign official.

Mr Vanderpuye said these experiences have equipped him with the leadership skills needed to steer the affairs of the party at the highest level.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Thursday, June 11, 2026, he disclosed that he would resign from his current role as DRIP National Coordinator if he formally decides to enter the race.

“If he [Johnson Asiedu Nketia] is not contesting, I’m ready to offer myself,” he said, adding that he believes he has the credentials to lead the party.

“This party has given me so much. I want to give back to the party,” he added.

He stressed that any decision to contest would be motivated by his desire to serve the NDC, insisting that his years of dedication and commitment have prepared him for the challenge of leading the party if the opportunity arises.
