Dear Coleen, my boyfriend and I split up a couple of months ago – but with the view that we both needed a break and that the option was on the table of possibly getting back together.

He moved out, but we’ve been meeting up once a week and having the most mind-blowing sex.

Is this normal?

Before he moved out, we were sick of each other and bored with the relationship.

But “breaking up” has been the best thing ever for us.26528388&cre=top&cip=7&view=web

I’m confused about what this all means and really need some advice on what to do.

How can we look at a long-term future if we can only stay together by living apart?

Coleen says

It sounds to me as if the passion and romance had disappeared from your relationship and being apart (and, in effect, dating again), has reignited those feelings in you.

Sometimes taking a break does work to help you remember why you love each other and why you got together in the first place – I just wonder if you’ve had enough of a break from each other.

I think what you need to look at if you want to commit to a future together, is how you bring that excitement into your relationship once you’re officially back together and living under the same roof again.

What can you learn from this time “apart”? When you’ve been together a while, romance takes some effort.

You also have to think about what will hold you together if you have kids in the future.

One of you can’t keep moving out when the going gets tough because you have to be there to support each other.
