“The next Black Stars manager, we can’t get it wrong.”
We have gotten it wrong for too long. We have tried every foreign passport. We have paid millions. And what did we get? Pain.
But today I want every Ghanaian to think with me.
If, as a country, we gave our Black Stars birthright to Otto Addo — who had NEVER coached a national team before — and today we even trust Desmond Ofei to be assistant Black Stars coach without any senior national team experience, why can’t we do the same for Ibrahim Tanko?
Let’s be honest with ourselves.
We trusted Otto Addo. Before Black Stars, he had zero experience as a head coach of any senior team. He was a Talent Coach at Dortmund. But because he is our brother, a Ghanaian, we said: “Let’s give him the chance.” And we did. We gave him all the support, all the money, all the time.
We trusted Desmond Ofei. A fantastic young Ghanaian coach, doing well with our U-20. But let’s be truthful, he has never coached a senior national team; he has never been to a World Cup, he has never won a Ghana Premier League. Yet we said, “Let’s trust him as assistant for the Black Stars to learn.” And we are right to do so.
So I ask: If we can trust Otto and Desmond with little to no experience, what sin has Ibrahim Tanko committed who has it all?
Compare:
Otto & Desmond before Black Stars: Passionate Ghanaians, but still learning the senior national team job.
Ibrahim Tanko TODAY:
– UEFA A License + 5 International Coaching Courses in Germany
– Started as U-17 Head Coach, SC Freiburg, Germany
– Assistant Coach, Urawa Red Diamonds, Japan
– Assistant Coach, FC Köln & Champions League with FC Copenhagen
– Assistant Coach, Cameroon – Qualified them for the 2014 WORLD CUP and 2015 AFCON
– Scout & Assistant, Ghana – Qualified us for the 2019 AFCON
– Head Coach, Black Meteors – Ended a 12-year drought, qualified Ghana to U-23 AFCON 2019
– Head Coach, Medeama SC – Just won the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League Title
– Former player: 2x Bundesliga Champion + Champions League Winner with Borussia Dortmund + 9 Black Stars caps
– Speaks Twi, English, French, German – He can manage local and foreign players
If we could give our birthright to Otto Addo with no experience, and we can trust Desmond Ofei to assist without experience, then we have NO MORAL RIGHT to deny Ibrahim Tanko, who is 10 times more qualified.
The solution to our Black Stars problem is Ghanaian.
Senegal trusted Aliou Cisse and won AFCON. Ivory Coast trusted Emerse Fae, who I still insist is not tactically better than Tanko, and they won AFCON. Morocco trusted Walid Regragui and made the World Cup semi-final.
When will Ghana trust Ghana?
We say we want a long-term project. We say we want patience. Even Sir Alex Ferguson will need time in Ghana. No coach can change our fortunes overnight.
Are we ready to go through the pain and smile later? If yes, let’s go through it with our own.
If Otto Addo deserved our birthright, if Desmond Ofei deserves our trust, then Ibrahim Tanko deserves the throne.
