Newly appointed Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has pledged to build a team capable of challenging for major honours both in Ghana and across Africa following his appointment ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The South African tactician was officially unveiled by the Porcupine Warriors as the club begins preparations for the new campaign, with expectations high after securing one of the continent’s most experienced coaches.

Speaking to the club’s official website after his appointment, Tinkler expressed his excitement about taking charge of the Ghanaian giants and outlined his ambitions for the team.

“I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions. Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development are not hidden in Africa.

“I look forward to working with the players, staff and management to build a team that can compete and win, both at home and on the continental stage.

“I feel proud to be associated with this great club at this historical moment,” he said.

Tinkler joins Kotoko with an extensive coaching résumé spanning several of South Africa’s top clubs, including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits.

His coaching achievements include leading Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final and guiding SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final.

He has also enjoyed domestic success, winning multiple cup competitions such as the MTN8 and the Telkom Knockout.

Before embarking on his coaching career, the 55-year-old enjoyed an illustrious spell as a player. He captained South Africa, earned 48 international caps and represented Bafana Bafana at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Tinkler was also a member of the South African squad that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations title.

At club level, he featured in England, Italy and Portugal, with notable spells at Barnsley and Cagliari.

Kotoko are expected to begin pre-season training in the coming days as preparations intensify for the 2026/27 campaign, with Tinkler set to begin work on assembling a squad capable of competing for domestic silverware and making a strong impression in continental competitions.
