While many may consider GH¢200 a small amount in today’s economy, Ghanaian fashion designer Selina Beb says that was all she needed to take the first step towards turning her fashion dreams into reality.
The creative revealed that her fashion journey began in 2012 with a simple idea of blending the beauty of African prints with the elegance and durability of genuine leather to create unique fashion pieces.
According to Selina Beb, she was able to take the first step because she already had a collection of African prints she had purchased over time.
“I had a lot of African prints because I love African prints. I used to buy some and hold them and keep them because I always saw my mom having loads of different kinds of African prints,” she said.
With the fabrics already available, Selina said her initial GH¢200 capital was invested in purchasing genuine leather, which she used to create her first African print and leather bag designs.
She explained that the idea was to merge traditional African aesthetics with a modern elements to create products that reflected Ghanaian identity while appealing to a wider audience.
What started as a small experiment has now become a brand filled with remarkable milestones, including international recognition and features that have placed her work on a global platform.
The designer, however, admitted that the road has not been without challenges, but she considers every obstacle part of the process.
“There have been lots of challenges, but there have been lots of highs and achievements, so I’ll say it’s been worth it,” she said.
Selina Beb urged young creatives and entrepreneurs not to underestimate the power of starting small, as she encouraged them to believe in their ideas and make the bold move of putting their work before the world.
