Ghanaian celebrity fashion designer Kwadwo Acheampong Preko, popularly known as Kwadwo Man, has revealed that a majority of the fabrics used in creating his unique designs are sourced locally from Kantamanto and Makola markets.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the creative lead of Kwadwo Man disclosed that about 90% of the materials used by his fashion house come from these popular Accra trading hubs, despite the perception that high-end fashion materials are mostly imported directly by designers.
According to him, materials such as leather, denim, fleece, wool and other unconventional fabrics can be found within Ghana’s local markets.
“We source about 90 per cent from Kantamanto and Makola. That’s where we get most of the fabrics from the leather, the denim and other materials,” he said.
Kwadwo Man explained that many people are unaware of the variety of quality materials available at these markets.
He said his brand has built its identity around experimenting with unconventional materials, including jeans, leather, wool, fleece and patchwork fabrics, to create designs that stand out.
During the interview, the designer showcased some of his creations, including a corduroy patchwork piece, while revealing that his designs have been worn by several Ghanaian celebrities, including KiDi, DopeNation, Afronita, Endurance Grand and Nana Ama McBrown, among others.
The revelation challenges the common perception that luxury or celebrity fashion must rely heavily on foreign-sourced materials.
