I sometimes applaud myself for the lyrics I write – Diana Hamilton

Gospel musician Diana Hamilton has shared that she occasionally applauds herself after writing certain lyrics, while humbly acknowledging that the inspiration ultimately comes from God.

During an interview on The Career Trail aired on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, Diana explained how her songwriting process is deeply rooted in divine guidance.

“It’s God, God, and God alone. Sometimes I call my manager and tell him, ‘Today the lyrics aren’t coming,’ and then, out of nowhere, God gives me a song. When I say God gives me a song, I mean He gives me a message or a chorus, and I begin to build on it,” she said.

Though she humbly acknowledges that the initial spark is divine, Diana doesn’t shy away from celebrating the way she crafts those raw ideas into meaningful lyrics.

“Sometimes, I clap for myself for certain lyrics I write. A few times I do that,” she disclosed.

She cited a standout moment in her song Meditation—the lyric “When I’m lost for words, may my heart do the talking,”—which conveys a deep emotional truth and reflects the kind of lyric she takes pride in writing.

“I give myself a pat on the back, because how can my heart do the talk?” she reflected.

When asked about her favorite song, Diana revealed that she doesn’t have one, as each track holds a special place in her heart, tied to personal memories and emotions.

“Every song carries memories of where I was, what I was going through, and why I wrote it,” she explained.

She recounted vivid moments connected to some of her songs.

“When you take a song like Meditation, it takes me back to sitting on a hospital bed on the top floor during the middle of Covid, when I wasn’t well. Then there’s Adom—I remember having a conversation with my sister in her guest room, telling her I had a new song.

“I sang it to her, but she thought it was rubbish. Then she said, ‘I have a song,’ sang hers, and I was like, wow—that song was Adom. With Onwanwani, I was about to do an experience session and told God I wanted a spontaneous song. I picked up my phone and sang it right then and there. Every song is special to me, so I don’t have a favorite,” she emphasised.

For Diana Hamilton, songwriting is a sacred dance between divine inspiration and personal creativity—each song a chapter of her journey, filled with heartfelt emotion and memorable stories.
