The Christian Council of Ghana has vowed to resist any attempt by government to legalize homosexuality in the country.
According to them, any attempt by the Akufo-Addo government to introduce it through the back door will spell doom for them.
General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong made the comment in an exclusive interview on KOFI TV after President Akufo-Addo said legalizing homosexuality in Ghana is bound to happen.
The President in an interview on aid the country’s culture and tradition for now does not allow the legalization of homosexuality but was quick to add that if public opinion changes, the law may just be amended.
But Rev. Opuni Frimpong said with the president’s position, Ghana is likely to bow to pressure from the gay community and it may cause a change in the law and the legalization of homosexuality.
The consequences of this, he said could make government unpopular and loss the 2020 general elections.
The Christian Council General Secretary said like the late president John Evans Attah Mills, the president must be clear on his stance because as far as he is concerned the country will not accept homosexuality.
“He [late Mills] was very exact and that is what we want to hear from our leaders today or tomorrow.
“Maybe I didn’t hear him well, so somebody should come and explain to us exactly the policy direction of this government as far as same sex marriage is concerned, it will help us,” he added.
Rev. Opuni Frimpong charged the clergy, Muslim community and civil society organizations to vote against any political party which champions the legalization of homosexuality in Ghana.
