Workers undertaking Tema Port Expansion Project are protesting what they described as poor conditions of service.
The workers therefore held a demonstration Thursday morning against the alleged failure of their employers, Laine Services Limited and Chec-Chinese Harbour Engineering Company to provide them good working conditions despite the high risk involved in their job.
“We the Ghanaian workers here are always taken for granted by these Chinese men. Our Chinese counterparts get more than we do, at the end of the month, they only give us GHC250, which is too little considering the risk involved in our job,” one angry worker said.
The workers also expressed their displeasure at the conditions under which they work, describing it as appalling.
Some workers, who spoke to Adom News’ Issabella Gidiglo-Ave, said they are paid meager wages for the very tedious work they do, compared to their Chinese counterparts, whose job they claimed to be less tedious.
They contended that though they did the same job as the Chinese, they the Ghanaian workers hardly get rest time and yet they are often asked to takeover the work of a Chinese worker is taking rest.
According to them, their work demanded lots of energy, so they need longer break time to eat something heavier, instead of the little snacks they take in due to 20 minutes break they get daily.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Tema East, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, who was at the scene, told Captain Smart on Adom Dwaso Nsem Thursday that he will engage the management of the company on the concerns of the workers.
