The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has appealed to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department not to go ahead and suspend salaries of its members.

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department has suspended salaries of seven thousand workers in the public sector.

This is because their heads of department have failed to validate them as workers in their respective institutions.

According to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, the suspension of salaries will affect those public sector workers on the mechanized payroll whose salaries have not been validated through the Electronic Payment Voucher System in August 2017 as well employees whose salaries were not validated.

But speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Friday, the Head of Compensation, Salaries and Conditions of Service at GNAT, Ahinaquah Quarshie said the association will not agree to the suspension.

According to him, the suspension is only a deliberate attempt to delay the validation process and further worsen the situation of affected teachers.

He said, “The work must be done and must be completed before we come back. The initial 29,000 documents have not been done and you want to suspend. We are even requesting that the entire exercise be completed before payment. What’s the guarantee that the rest will be paid?’’

He continued that “What is going on does not guarantee completion of the exercise so if it’s about funding, they should do something about it in one or two weeks else they will face our wrath”.
