Torrential rains that started late Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, June 29, 2026, have triggered flooding across several parts of Accra, leaving major roads submerged and throwing the morning rush hour into chaos.
Floodwaters inundated low-lying areas and key arterial roads, forcing vehicles to crawl through submerged sections while some motorists abandoned their routes altogether.
Commuters struggled to get to work and school as heavy traffic built up on waterlogged streets.
Affected areas included parts of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa stretch, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Sakaman, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, portions of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and several surrounding communities.
Some people in the affected areas have taken to social media to share visuals of the situation.

Accra’s recurring flooding during heavy downpours has once again highlighted long-standing challenges, including poor drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and unplanned urban development.
