Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has completed the replacement of weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines following a maintenance exercise that began on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The company said the work was completed on schedule despite technical and operational challenges encountered during the exercise.
Following the repairs, water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
GWL, however, cautioned that consumers should not expect an immediate return to normal water supply, as the transmission lines and reservoirs need time to fill and for operating pressure to gradually build up.
“Barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers are expected to receive water as the system stabilises,” the company said in a statement.
The company stressed that the resumption of production at the Kpong Treatment Plant does not mean continuous water supply will immediately return to all affected communities.
It said its Water Demand Management and rationing programme remains in place to ensure the available water is distributed fairly among consumers.
“Customers are therefore encouraged to continue observing their usual rationing schedules,” GWL said, while appealing to consumers to remain patient as the network is recharged, reservoirs replenished and water pressure restored.
The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, who monitored the works at various stages, commended the engineers, contractors, maintenance teams and technical personnel for completing the exercise on schedule.
He specifically praised the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams, for their leadership and commitment.
Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the repairs demonstrated “the value of teamwork, technical expertise, strong coordination and committed leadership” in addressing critical infrastructure challenges.
He also expressed appreciation to the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG technical team for their support throughout the exercise.
According to him, the ECG team worked closely with GWL personnel, including through the night, to resolve critical electrical and operational issues and help facilitate the timely resumption of water production at Kpong.
Mr Mutawakilu further thanked the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams and other stakeholders for their contributions to the exercise.
GWL also expressed gratitude to customers and residents in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions for their patience and cooperation during the maintenance period.
The company assured the public that the transmission pipeline would continue to be closely monitored as water supply is gradually restored.
Ghana Water Ltd said it remains committed to proactive maintenance, modernising its infrastructure and improving the reliability of water supply to consumers.
