The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has intensified calls for the establishment of a fire station in Gushegu following a fire outbreak that gutted the ICT laboratory of the National Teachers Council (NTC) in the municipality.
The fire, which occurred on Monday, August 17, 2026, destroyed computers and other learning equipment at the facility.
Following the incident, the Regional Fire Commander led a delegation to Gushegu to assess the damage and engage local authorities on measures to strengthen fire safety and emergency response in the municipality.
The team met with the Municipal Chief Executive, Hafiz, the Municipal Coordinator and members of the Municipal Assembly, where discussions centred on the urgent need for a permanent fire station in Gushegu.
The Assembly subsequently took the delegation to inspect a parcel of land earmarked for the construction of the proposed station.
Mr Hafiz assured the Fire Command that the Assembly was committed to commencing work on the project before the end of the year.
The delegation also visited the Karaga District Assembly, where it was received by the Deputy Coordinating Director. Discussions there focused on the establishment of another fire station to serve Karaga and neighbouring communities.
The Regional Fire Commander said fire stations in both municipalities would significantly reduce response times to emergencies and help protect schools, public institutions, businesses and residential communities.
The development has been welcomed by residents and school authorities in Gushegu, who say a permanent fire station would strengthen the municipality’s preparedness and response to future fire emergencies.
They are now hoping the Assembly follows through on its pledge and begins work on the proposed facility as soon as possible.
