The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast continued rainfall along the coastline, including Accra, through Thursday, with thunderstorms likely to develop over the middle, transition and northern parts of the country from late afternoon.
In its 18-hour forecast valid from 6am on Thursday, July 2, GMet indicated that slight to moderate rain will affect the coast and parts of the Oti Region in the morning and could persist intermittently into the evening.
Mist and fog are also expected to reduce visibility over forest and mountainous areas early in the day.
In Accra, the chance of rain is placed at around 40% for much of the day, with temperatures ranging between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. The northern sector is expected to be the hottest, with temperatures reaching up to 34 degrees.
The forecast comes just days after Monday’s devastating floods, which Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak told Parliament claimed 12 lives and displaced over 38,800 people, with 7,761 households affected across 25 communities.
Monday’s rainfall of 169 millimetres was the fourth-highest daily total recorded since 1995.
There appears to be little immediate relief in sight. GMet has raised the coastal risk rating to “be prepared”, the second-highest on its scale, warning Accra to brace for more heavy rain.
