The Gladiators Cycling Club will host two major cycling events this September in celebration of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and one of Africa’s foremost Pan-African figures.
The Heritage Fun Cycling event will take place on Saturday, 19 September 2026, followed by the Osagyefo Criterium on Monday, 21 September 2026, the anniversary of Dr Nkrumah’s birth.
HERITAGE FUN CYCLING — SATURDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER
Designed as a recreational heritage ride, the Heritage Fun Cycling event will cover approximately 40 kilometres, starting and ending at the University of Ghana Sports Complex.
The route will connect riders with notable landmarks across Accra, including the George Padmore Library, Accra Sports Stadium and Black Star Square, before reaching the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum.
These landmarks were not chosen at random. Each carries significant influence and legacy tied to Dr Nkrumah’s life and leadership — from the George Padmore Library, built in honour of his close Pan-African ally and advisor, to Black Star Square, commissioned under his leadership to mark Ghana’s independence, and the Accra Sports Stadium, a venue that rose to national prominence during his presidency — culminating at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, his final resting place.
At the Memorial Park, participants will take part in a commemorative tree-planting ceremony, followed by a brief media soiree marking the significance of the occasion.
OSAGYEFO CRITERIUM — MONDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER
The Osagyefo Criterium will bring together elite cyclists in a competitive race commemorating Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday.
The race will cover approximately:
– Men: 113 km over 10 laps
– Women: 67.8 km over 6 laps
The event is sanctioned by the Ghana Cycling Federation and will feature prize awards for competitors, together with sponsored giveaways.
The Osagyefo Criterium is proudly supported by E-Moto Ghana as Headline Sponsor, bringing elite competition together with the evolving conversation around sustainable mobility.
CYCLING IN CELEBRATION OF HERITAGE
Beyond competition and recreation, the two events seek to use cycling as a platform for remembering a defining chapter in Ghana’s history and highlighting Dr Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana’s independence, national development and the wider Pan-African movement.
By connecting sport with historically significant locations, the programme offers participants an opportunity to experience Accra’s heritage while celebrating the ideals of progress, unity and African self-determination associated with Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy.
The Gladiators Cycling Club invites cycling enthusiasts, the sporting community, corporate organisations, the media and the general public to participate in and support the two commemorative events.
HERITAGE. CYCLING. LEGACY.
