Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has commenced controlled spillage at the Weija Dam following a significant rise in the water level caused by heavy rainfall within the dam’s catchment area.
The company said on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, that the water level had reached 45.2 feet, edging closer to the 46-foot threshold, as rainfall continued across the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
GWL said the controlled release was necessary as a precautionary measure to regulate the increasing water level and protect the structural integrity of the dam.
The company has therefore directed residents in communities downstream of the facility to evacuate immediately due to the potential risk of flooding resulting from the spillage.
Residents have also been advised to remain alert, follow instructions from the relevant authorities and avoid activities that could put their lives and property at risk.
GWL has further urged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), district assemblies, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other stakeholders to activate precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuations.
Among the communities identified as being at risk are Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, alongside nearby communities.
The water company said it is closely monitoring developments and will continue to provide updates as the situation changes.
