The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that government is making steady progress toward the nationwide SIM re-registration exercise, which is expected to begin by the end of 2026.
According to him, the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen digital identity systems, enhance telecommunications security, and reduce fraud within the country’s mobile network space.
He explained that the exercise is currently at the preparatory stage, with key institutional approvals and legal frameworks being put in place to ensure smooth implementation.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 6, Sam George disclosed that significant progress has already been made, including regulatory clearance to begin procurement processes for the digital platform that will support the exercise.
“Just yesterday [Friday, June 5], we received clearance from the PPA to start the procurement process, and we are also at the Attorney General’s office so we can have a proper legal regime to do the registration and so the LI is currently with the AG’s department,” he said.
He further noted that government is working to ensure all necessary processes are completed before rollout.
“We are hopeful that by the time we will be done with the procurement processes for the platform, we would have finished with the AG, laid the LI in Parliament and have it mature, and I am hopeful that by the end of the year, we will be in position to go,” he added.
