The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition is urging government institutions to discharge their duties without fear or favour or religious considerations.

Executive Secretary of the Coalition, Beauty Emefa Narteh who made the call said when state institutions and systems are strengthened it would help in facilitating the rapid socio-economic development of the country.

“Institutions in the country, especially, independent bodies need to work without fear or favour. It is very important to do so in order to help strengthen our economy,” she said.

Mrs Narteh’s comment follows revelations by the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, that Member of Parliament for Bawku Central constituency, Mahama Ayariga has made several attempts to block his investigations into cars he bought.

Martin Amidu in a statement to the Economic and Organised Crime Unit said Mr Ayariga had sent personal friends, former colleagues, chiefs, pastors among others, to beg him [Amidu] to stop the investigations into some of his activities as a public official.

Martin Amidu, who said he was investigating Ayariga on suspicion of commission of corruption and abusing his office by importing three Toyota Land Cruiser V8s into the country, added that Mr Ayariga refused to honour an invitation by EOCO over the matter.

But speaking on Adom FM’s Morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, Mrs Narteh said those who obstruct justice could be punished according to the laws of the country.

She indicated that institutions, especially, the office of the SP need to be independent and firm.

She noted that institutions must be robust and effective in pointing out flaws in government decisions and actions and inactions of government officials.
