The High Court is today, September 23, expected to hear the bail application filed by lawyers for senior nursing officer Salomey Awity Baffoe, who is facing charges in connection with the “Ghana Jollof” case.
The application, filed on Friday, is scheduled for hearing at 9:00 a.m. at the High Court Complex, as the defence seeks her release from custody.
Salomey’s lawyer, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, says the legal team is confident that the court will grant her bail and allow her to reunite with her children.
“It was filed on Friday, and the date for hearing is Wednesday at 9 o’clock at the High Court Complex. We are very confident that she’ll be released to go and enjoy life and take care of her children, who have not had their mother for the last 10 days,” he said.
The defence maintains that there is no basis for keeping Salomey in custody, arguing that the police investigation has effectively been completed.
“Demonstrably from the government’s own statement, there’s no outstanding investigation to be conducted. So why is she being held?” the lawyer asked.
Salomey is facing a charge of abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news. She has pleaded not guilty after the Adentan Circuit Court remanded her for two weeks on Friday, September 18.
Police allege that she assisted Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, whom they identify as the operator of the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account and who is believed to be in the United Kingdom, to distribute videos and recruit others to circulate the content.
According to the Police, forensic analysis of Salomey’s phone, including audio and video files, as well as mobile money records, uncovered alleged financial links between her and Ms Kodua.
The bail hearing comes as Salomey’s continued detention has attracted growing attention, with her lawyers challenging both the basis for her remand and aspects of the investigation.
She is expected to return to the Adentan Circuit Court on September 28 for further proceedings in the substantive case.
Today’s High Court hearing will determine whether she remains in custody pending trial or is released on bail.
