Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the association’s leadership is deeply disappointed by the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana suffered consecutive defeats in their opening two matches, losing 2-0 away to Ivory Coast before falling to a 4-2 defeat against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The results have left the four-time African champions bottom of Group C without a point, intensifying pressure on the team and its technical leadership.
Asante Twum said the GFA understood the frustration of supporters and acknowledged the need to take responsibility for the disappointing performances.
“Looking at what happened, we need to stay calm and listen to the masses because we were disappointed with the outcome of the game, and the leadership and the coach [Carlos Queiroz] took responsibility for the result,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“We understand the pain of the fans and everyone. We understand the plight and pain of Ghanaians after the team’s poor start.
“We are not happy with what happened after the game, and we are pained. We admit that what happened was bad, and it takes a lot of effort and commitment to get things back on track.”
He added that the ongoing review process would help the association determine the way forward for the national team.
“When the committee is done with their work, and we get the outcome, we will all say we have charted a good course,” he said.
The disappointing campaign led to the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who stepped down following Ghana’s poor results in the qualifiers.
The Black Stars are expected to face Somalia in a double-header next month, with an interim technical team set to oversee the two matches at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Meanwhile, a five-member search committee established by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the GFA is expected to identify a new head coach after the Somalia fixtures as Ghana seek to revive their qualifying campaign.
