Administrative offices at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) remain open, while some essential services, including IT, have been disrupted as the industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) enters its second day.
Members of GAUA are on a nationwide strike in protest against what they describe as unfair disparities in market premiums and allowances.
Although the administrators have laid down their tools, JoyNews checks on the KNUST campus revealed that some administrative offices were operating, with students and other non-striking staff seeking assistance.
Enquiries at the offices indicated that contract staff and administrators who are not members of GAUA were at post to assist individuals seeking solutions to their concerns.
However, access to some IT infrastructure required to process certain requests remained a challenge, as key staff responsible for those systems were not at post.
Ordinarily, the parking lot in front of the university’s administration block is filled with vehicles, particularly during working hours. However, checks showed several empty spaces, suggesting that some of the usual occupants could be members of GAUA.
At the university’s IT office, students were seen in a queue as some officials attended to their needs. However, an office occupied by a GAUA member was closed.
JoyNews sources indicate that the association may not have properly notified the National Labour Commission before embarking on the industrial action.
