A fuel tanker has caught fire near the Kpone Barrier on the Tema-Aflao Road after reportedly overturning, leaving the driver and his mate feared trapped inside the burning vehicle.
The tanker, with registration number GT 8261-23, is said to have overturned after suffering a front tyre burst before bursting into flames moments later.
The incident has brought traffic on the busy highway to a standstill, leaving hundreds of motorists and commuters stranded as emergency services respond to the scene.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly after the tanker overturned, raising concerns that it could extend to nearby facilities.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have been deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) fuel storage facility, located about 200 metres from the scene.
The condition of the driver and his mate remains unknown, although they are feared to be trapped inside the vehicle.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire and have not released details on possible casualties or the extent of damage.
Emergency responders are continuing efforts to extinguish the fire and restore traffic flow on the affected stretch of the Tema-Aflao Road.
