Four people, including children, have sustained injuries after a storey residential building collapsed at Adenta Newsite in Accra during Wednesday evening’s heavy downpour.
In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the injured victims are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
The incident occurred near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket when the one-storey building, which contained both ground-floor and first-floor apartments, suddenly collapsed, trapping five occupants beneath the debris.
According to the GNFS, the victims comprised two women and three males, including three children — one girl and two boys.
Before emergency responders arrived, residents managed to rescue two injured occupants from the rubble and rushed them to hospital for treatment.
Firefighters from the GNFS later rescued two additional victims, bringing the total number of rescued persons to four. All four are currently receiving medical care at the 37 Military Hospital.
Rescuers also saved a dog that had been trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
As of the latest update, emergency teams remain at the scene searching for the fifth occupant, a woman who is believed to still be trapped under the debris.
The collapse occurred amid heavy rainfall that battered parts of Accra, causing flooding and widespread disruption across the capital.
The GNFS commended residents for their swift response in rescuing the first two victims before emergency personnel arrived. The Service also acknowledged the support of other agencies involved in the ongoing rescue operation.
Meanwhile, authorities are yet to determine the cause of the collapse.
