Fake Ghanaian lecturer exposed after rising to become Dean

The 2015 Auditor General’s Report has revealed that a fake lecturer at the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) (formerly the Koforidua Polytechnic) has succeeded in teaching at the university for nine years and received salaries amounting to GH¢201,065.

According to the report, Richmond Kweku Frempong claimed that he had obtained a master’s degree from the Coventry University in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2004, but years later, it turned out that the certificate was fake.

The report said Frempong was engaged by the polytechnic in February 2006 as a lecturer and rose through the ranks to become a senior lecturer, before he was elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management.

It blamed the authorities of the KTU for not doing due diligence in scrutinising Frempong’s certificate before engaging him.

Vacation of post

The report said when the university became suspicious of the genuineness of Frempong’s certificate, it set up a committee to verify them.

It said while the investigation was going on, Frempong tendered in his resignation, which was rejected by the university, but he vacated his post.

Answering questions at the sitting of the PAC in Ho yesterday, the Vice-Chancellor of the KTU, Prof. Mrs Smike Dzisi, said the university had referred the case to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for further investigations and action.

She said Mr Frempong was at large, but EOCO was still investigating the case.

The Chairman of PAC, Mr James Avedzi, urged the authorities of the university to follow up with EOCO to ensure Mr Frempong’s arrest.

  1. This is no worse than government officials especially Ministers of State who took double salary which is criminal. If Richmond Kweku Frempong is being pursued, then the same James Avedzi should ensure that his criminal colleagues are brought to book immediately.

Democracy puts us all at par. Nobody is more human than the other in a democratic environment like our 4th Republic. Their is more serious a crime than Frempong’s.

  2. He faked certificates but has been able to perform the job all this while giving no clue of ingenuity and even elected Dean…great. What of ministers altering documents to pocket huge sums of money at the expense of the tax payer….which of these should EOCO be directing its resources at??

  3. Mr. Kusi I think there’s no criminal case here when it was not their fault. The best thing to do is to ask them to pay back or deduct it from their salaries, as most of them are still in service. If they failed then you can charge them. That’s my opinion.

  4. If this man has risen to the rank of dean, then he is good. He has helped the school a lot.

Do not jail him. Let him continue lecturing with 70% of his salaries to be used to pay the accumulated collected salaries.
    The man is still useful.

  5. The so call fake lecture was able to perform his duties well, and through that a lot of students have been able to perform well and graduated. When he was a lecture, no body got suspicious about him but jot that he has rising up to become Dean, even his own colleagues envy him.

Please let him go. And I don’t think he needs to pay his salaries back, because he worked for it. They should rather encourage him to pursue his masters.
