The pick of clashes in the early-evening slot for the Europa League comes from the Basque region in Spain, as Athletic Bilbao look to overturn a 1-2 deficit at home to Italian heavyweights Roma – with manager Ernesto Valverde anticipating another tight encounter.
“It [the first leg] was a balanced match, similar to the one we played in September,” said the Athletic manager. “Roma and Athletic Club are two teams that compete; at times they were the better team, and at times we were. In the final moments, we had to defend, and we conceded a goal in the final seconds. Now we have the return leg at San Mamés, and we’ll try to come back.”
The same time slot will also feature Lazio hosting Viktoria Plzen with a 2-1 lead; Bodo-Glimt take a 3-0 lead to Greece for their clash with Olympiacos; and Eintracht Frankfurt will be confident of advancing thanks to a 2-1 lead ahead of hosting Ajax Amsterdam.
The late-evening kick-offs feature Tottenham Hotspur trying to overturn a 1-0 deficit at home to AZ Alkmaar, and Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is confident they will make the most of home advantage in North London.
“We’ll be at home, we’re capable of scoring goals and putting pressure on the opponent. We’ll perform better than we did [in the first leg],” said the Australian tactician.
Also keep an eye out for Manchester United at home to Real Sociedad – with their tie delicately poised at 1-1 – as well as Rangers looking to finish off Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce. The Scottish giants hold a 3-1 lead from the first leg, and manager Barry Ferguson has warned against complacency.
“We had a real good set up against a real dangerous team. They’ve got players who can really hurt you in the final third so we had to be defensively really solid then when we broke from defence we had to break at pace, and we did that and caused Fenerbahçe a lot of problems. Fenerbahçe will be hurting so we need to be prepared for that [in the return game],” said Ferguson.
In the Conference League, Chelsea hold a 2-1 lead ahead of hosting FC Copenhagen at Stamford Bridge; and Vitoria SC and Real Betis are locked at 2-2 ahead of their return game in Portugal.
