The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Police Service to investigate a shooting incident at Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School in Yendi in the Northern Region, which reportedly left the school’s headmaster injured and caused panic among pupils and teachers.

Preliminary reports indicate that two armed men allegedly entered the school premises and fired shots, forcing pupils and staff to flee in fear.

The headmaster is also reported to have been assaulted during the incident.

In a statement, the Ministry condemned the attack, describing it as a serious threat to the safety and security of the school community.

“The Ministry of Education unequivocally condemns the disturbing shooting incident that occurred at Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School in Yendi, in the Northern Region,” the statement said.

The Ministry stressed that schools must remain safe spaces for children and educators, noting that educational institutions are dedicated to teaching, learning and the holistic development of pupils.

It described the use of firearms, violence and intimidation on school premises as unacceptable and a grave threat to the well-being of learners, teachers and the wider educational community.

Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has since directed the Ghana Police Service to conduct immediate investigations into the incident and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

“The Minister has directed the immediate attention of the Ghana Police Service to this criminal act and has called for swift investigations into the incident,” the statement added.

The Ministry also appealed to the public to respect the sanctity of schools and refrain from actions that could endanger the lives of pupils and teachers.

Expressing solidarity with those affected, the Ministry said it stands with the injured headmaster, pupils and staff, and wished the headmaster a speedy recovery.

It further assured parents, guardians and the general public of its commitment to working with security agencies to ensure schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
