A missionary of the Church of Christ, Brother Dan Owusu-Asiamah says Christians aren’t supposed to pay tithe to pastors in the church.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM Monday, Pastor Owusu-Asiamah said most pastors are defrauding church members by using tithe-paying as an instrument to enrich themselves.

He explained that the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible forbids pastors to extort monies from worshippers.

The man of God said pastors who collect 10 percent of their members’ incomes are no different from “corrupt” politicians.

“Tithe-paying is fraud. Under no circumstance was anyone asked to pay tithe in the Bible. Tithing has to do with foodstuffs. Everything they are doing now is wrong. We speak about corruption and talk about politicians. Corruption begins in the church. The church is actively doing these things. In Deuteronomy 14:25, it tells you, tithe isn’t about money…”

He continued that “There is a difference between offertory and tithing, Malaika chapter 3: 8-10 says Tithing has nothing to do with money but offering does. I challenge every clergyman to open a passage that says we should pay tithe on a monthly basis. No apostle asked a Christian to give one-tenth. Now it’s more like a law that some churches even collect the tithe before they bury the dead. How do you mark those who pay tithe in church?”

But Reverend Joshua Adjei of the Bread of Life Evangelistic Ministry disagreed with Brother Dan Owusu-Asiamah’s assertions on tithe-paying.

According to him, Christians who pay tithe in churches see themselves as descendants of Abraham hence paying it tends to boost their spiritual development.

He, however, confirmed paying tithe isn’t mandatory.

“Tithe doesn’t exist to enrich pastors. Abraham went to war and realized if he wants to praise God then he should give 10 part of his items got. God didn’t push him. He had the spirit of God in him. It wasn’t imposed because of Levites. God made Abraham pay tithe. Galatians 3:4 confirms it. It’s all about understanding, it is not by force…” he maintained.

  1. Is this news? Y’all get a life.. How many church members are farmers today to bring foodstuffs… They work in offices n r paid with money so they pay with money.. I pay my tithe cus I have a covernent with God.. Genesis 28:22…what the pastor does with that money is his problem… I I give to others n do other Christian deciplines but my tithe is my tithe… U guys stop being lazy n write on more news worthy topics

  2. Mr. Abraham is missing the mark and these are the people “MEN OF GOD”who are leading people away from the truth. When Abraham and Jacob in the bible paid tithe it was not law hence voluntary but it became mandatory when it became law in Leviticus 27:30-34. It was mandatory for all Israelites so if he perceive those professing the the Christian faith are “defendants of Abraham” then under the law it is mandatory so it should be mandatory for his flocks. These convenient preachers await the wrath of God.

Thanks Bro. Dan. Continue steadfastly in letting Ghanaians and the world know the truth.

    • Mr. Abraham is not leading anybody away from any truth sir. Because what you are basing your argument on does not also take into consideration what we are and who we truly follow. We are CHRISTIANS, the followers of Christ our Lord and Savior, so I believe the question therefore should be: Was this the case with Jesus and His disciples? Indeed Paul even makes this believe system a nonstarter by claiming boldly that the church knows that he does not burden them with his needs and that he works with his hands before he eats. The life of Jesus and His disciples never support your claims sir, so please let us stop deceiving God’s people. Thanks.

  4. True
Deut 14:23-26…Eat the tithe of ur grain, wine etc in de presence of de lord ur God at a place he will choose but if de place is distant den exchange ur tithe for silver, buy anything u wish den u & urhousehold will eat der in de presence of the lord ur God and rejoice.

Galatians 4:3 does not say anything abt Abraham paying tithe.

  5. Does this man receive money from his church as a minister there? If he does he should wait for God to deal with him too because he is a hypocrite.

And those ignorant Christians, Tithes collected in churches are for supporting ministers at the temple of God not just a particular pastor, supporting ministers is not passed.

One basic use of tithe was to support ministers.

1 Corinthians 9:13-14 (NET) Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple eat food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar receive a part of the offerings?
In the same way the Lord commanded those who proclaim the gospel to receive their living by the gospel.

Numbers 18:21 (KJV) And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Those who are ministers in the house of God who cannot do any work because of the ministry are supported with tithe. That’s the biblical way ministers we’re supported.

Only the blind Christian will be moved by the question who is a levite today to receive Tithes? Childish question, Tithes were not given to Levites because they are Levites, it because they were the ones that were chosen by God to work in his house on behalf of the congregation of Israel.

Another childish question is was tithe in money?

I think you should as well ask, did the Bible in olden days have red ink like we have some part of our Bibles written in red ink today, or to even ask, is the Bible today written with the same ink used in the olden days?, If this questions don’t make sense, you simply should answer yourself.

Lastly, if tithe is not free will because members are asked to pay a defined amount and not what they like,

Then we should as well cancel all monthly dues collections like welfare dues and the rest in our churches because you are not allowed to give what you want.

The fact that some false preachers are taking advantage of church members through tithing, it doesn’t mean it is wrong, because even the name of Jesus is used to rob people, must we stop mentioning Jesus name.

We should all learn the Bible and stop being misled by people who are selfish.

  6. *****Hidden Truth*****

In this last days, knowledge of the word of God shall increase, many will begin to question a lot of the practices and preaching of the Church. As these things unveil, Christianity will not become a mystery as some have made it to be.
Do you see how people have started questioning “Tithing” in Nigeria? Many of such “questioning” will follow. Some books written on such things will remain on the shelves and totally be discarded.
As a Christian, we are Only given “the Gospel” to fulfil or practice and not a “Bible”.
    The word Bible simply means; a book that contains;
    1. the Tora or Law and the Prophets ( Old Testament)
    2. the Gospel (New Testaments). The Tora produced Judaism whiles the Gospel produced Christianity. The Tora is a reference to the Gospel. There is no salvation in the Tora but there is salvation in the Gospel.
So you can now see what a preacher may be producing in a church member if we continue to teach and practice the two books equal? This is the reason why many members in the church are confused.
The Tora teaches more on fears (curses) which is not so with the Gospel.
No preacher can teach fear and base it on the gospel because it has no such things.
The Tora teachings in this new dispensation has brought a lot of ignorance to the church of Christ. Such as; open heaven, closed heavens, generational curses, curses, you cannot be blessed if you don’t tithe, you need deliverance from demons even after becoming born again, false humility, portraying a Christian from only negative traits.

  7. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. It is interesting to hear from those who claim they are Christians but their actions including their practices speak otherwise. They say the Israelites gave one tenth and worshipped on Sabbath day and so are Christians to do same. This is also Satan’s way to pervert the biblical truth so people who are loved by God will be deceived to Satan’s kingdom.

To brethren who pay tithe in the Christendom, why have you left out the weightier matters such as grain offering, guilt offering, yearly offering, and the feast of unleavened bread, the feast of weeks, the feast of tabernacle, yearly tithe and quarterly tithe (Deuteronomy 14; Numbers 18; Deuteronomy 18)? Also, why have they left out the offering of first born Male be it man or animal and the sacrifice of bulls and goats? The Israelites were given specific instructions by God in connection with food that they should eat and not to eat such as meat, Deuteronomy 14. This was the time God has chosen one nation (Israel) to be his people, bear in mind there were other nations by then if not at all at least the was Egypt as well as the nation called Canaan, why didn’t God gave those nations His laws? If you claim to follow the old covenant or the Law of Moses then you should not be choosy. You must follow all the commandments in the Law, simpliciter!

The biblical truth is a tenth of the produce of the earth consecrated and set apart for special purposes. The dedication of a tenth to God was recognized as a duty before the time of Moses. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek (Genesis. 14:20; Hebrews. 7:6); and Jacob vowed unto the Lord and said, “Of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.” Note that as at then they did it willingly and it wasn’t a commandment. The first Mosaic Law on this subject is recorded in Leviticus 27:30-32. Subsequent legislation regulated the destination of the tithes (Numbers 18:21-24, 26-28; Deuteronomy 12:5, 6, 11, 17; 14:22, 23). The paying of the tithes was an important part of the Jewish religious worship. In the days of Hezekiah one of the first results of the reformation of religion was the eagerness with which the people brought in their tithes (2 Chronicles 31:5, 6). The neglect of this duty was sternly rebuked by the prophets (Amos 4:4; Malachi 3:8-10).

It cannot be affirmed that the Old Testament Law of tithes is binding on the Christians today, nevertheless the principle of this law remains, and is incorporated in the gospel (1 Corinthians. 9:13-14); and if, as is the case, the motive that ought to prompt liberality in the cause of religion and of the service of God be greater now than in Old Testament times, then Christians ought to go beyond the ancient Hebrew in consecrating both themselves and their substance to God.

Paul said, the person who is guilty of one in the Law is guilty of the entire commandments. You see it is not easy to be an “Israelite”. The Israelites themselves did not have it easy, they could not follow all the commandments and tithe was not paid monthly according to the Law of Moses. It was paid yearly and quarterly according to Deuteronomy Chapter 14. And they are not paid to pastors but to Levites according to Numbers 18:21-24. Those who collect tithes from their members are they Levites as prescribed by the Law given to Moses? No. Even so, every Jew was required by the Levitical law to pay three tithes of his property that is, one tithe for the Levites, one for the use of the temple as well as the great feasts and one for the poor of the land. In practice is that how it done today? No.

Today they are pastors from tribes other than Levites and so are not qualified to collect them. Even the tithe in the Bible was not money (Nehemiah chapter 13, Matthew 23:23). It was tithe of farm produce, when in the Bible did God instructed the Israelites to pay cash to the Levites? The only case one change the tithe of farm produce into silver is when the way to the place God has chosen to receive the tithe is far, with that when you get to the chosen place you buy anything of your choice and enjoy with your family and other people (Deuteronomy 14:22-26). The Levites according to the Law are to tithe the tithes they receive from their brothers. Do the pastors pay tithes if we are to go according to the Law?

The tithe was given to the Levites as a gift and an inheritance for their work in the tent of meeting thus, Numbers 18, Deuteronomy 18, for they did not have a share in the apportionment of the land in Israel, if you are not a Levite you cannot be a priest and you do not have any business to come near the tent of meeting. If you do, then death beckons. So the issue of tithe only became a law of God in the advent of the Levitical priesthood. Tithing was not a law of God when Abraham paid to Melchizedek Genesis 14 the same applies to Jacob in Genesis 28. The two patriarchs paid out of free will or by choice, that established when Paul in Hebrews 7 explained that perfection was not attained in the Levitical priesthood hence the Law was repealed. The Law that says that only Levites can do temple work does not hold. Hence no Levitical priesthood no tithing!

Christ has made us (Christians) able ministers of a better covenant (Galatians 4:4, 2 Corinthians 3:6-7). Christ under the restored covenant expects you to give out of what He has blessed you with not grudgingly but cheerfully for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6,7; Luke 6:38; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2). Under the New Covenant, we are a Royal Priesthood and a chosen nation (1 Peter 2:9), we all give collection, nobody among us pay tithes to any tribe as it was in the Old Covenant, which was weak, useless and deadly that is according to (Hebrews 7:18, Hebrews 8:13, Hebrews 8:6-7, 2 Corinthians 3:7, Roman 8:3).

Galatians 3:10-14 says that, curse is anyone who observes the Law. The Law could not put us right with God so when the hour came God sent His Son born of a woman and born under the Law to redeem those under the Law. He was made a curse for us so he can redeem those under the curse of the Law. The death of Christ on the cross has cancelled the ordinances in the Law (that is, the Pentateuch). Those that are in Christ are therefore free from the Law and its curse. Christ is now a mediator of a better covenant founded on better promises Hebrews 8:6. The Sabbath, tithing and the different kind of feasts and offerings in the Law of Moses have been blotted out by the death of Christ so we can be put right with God by having faith in Christ Jesus.

Some argued that in Malachi 3:8-9 we rob God if Christians don’t pay tithes and offerings. This is much expected from pastors who don’t understand the dispensations of the scriptures. Brethren to understand this verse one must ask, why did God warn the children of Israel through prophet Malachi? Let us visit a contemporary of Malachi and Nehemiah to really know the reason for such a warning. In Nehemiah 13:10 the Israelites stopped paying the tithes and offerings to the Levites. As a result, the Levites stopped working in the tabernacle and went to their fields to work so they can feed themselves and families. So Nehemiah rebuked them saying ‘why have you neglected the house of God?’ thus, Malachi echoed the same warning to Israel in Malachi 3:8-9. You see even the children of Israel were not able to follow all the commandments of the tithes and offerings, you are here making things byzantine for yourself and entangling other people with it. Malachi 3:8 does not in any way mean that when you don’t pay tithes as a Christian and I mean as a Christian you are robbing God. The Israelites as at then were not Christians, we today by the Grace of Christ death and resurrection are Christians! However, God loves a cheerful giver. God knows your work and financial ability, He says give as you have been prospered. The measure you use to give the same measure will be used for you. Giving in the ministry of the Spirit (New Covenant) is based on free-will not under coercion or determination (one-tenth).

So, one could deduce from the above that it is a privilege to worship and practiced on the doctrine of Christ Jesus in the New Testament. Hence, the lord will not ask you to give something you do not have, but He knows you have so give and receive the blessings. If you don’t have to give He will not curse you as false pastors preach. Tithing is not a law in the ministry of the Spirit (New Covenant) but a law in the ministry of the written code (Old Covenant) Colossians 2:14-17.

To conclude on the above, any pastor telling you if you don’t pay tithe you are cursed or not be blessed is not true and is a “spiritual 419” to compel people to pay tithe using Malachi 3 as the basis to amass affluence, if not they should justified it with biblical precedents where Jesus Christ, the Apostles that is, Paul, Peter, James, John, among others took tithe or pay tithe in the Bible. Be mindful that Christianity started after the ascension of Jesus Christ and the descending of the Holy Spirit to empower the apostles to proclaim the Gospel. If you are a Christian today and you are practicing the provisions of the Old Covenant then Christ death will have no effect on you and there is a veil covering your face from Christ as stated in 2 Corinthians 3:12-18; Hebrews 10:1-2. Anyone who seeks to justify the Law is cut off from Christ. Therefore if you are in Christ old things have passed away behold everything has become new. Brethren choose freedom which is in Christ (New Covenant) or choose curse which is in the Law of Moses (Old Covenant). God Bless You For Reading!!!

  8. How many times did Jesus mention tithe? He did not command anyone to pay tithe but rather rebuked those who think paying tithe is salvation( Matthew 23:23). The most important thing Jesus talked about was FAITHFULNESS, MERCY and JUSTICE.
If we claim to be followers of Christ then……….

  9. I quite agree with Bro. Dan. Tithe payment is not biblical in this Christian dispensation. It was a way that God used to cater for the Levites who were not given part of the land distributed to the other families. God did that so that the Levites could serve in His house.

  10. Tithe was been paid to the levites those days cos they had nothing of what God shared. We are supposed to pay our pastors but not necessarily call it tithe cos tithe is 1/10 of whatever you get and God says that we Christians today should let our righteousness exceed that of the pharasees before we could earn a place in heaven and so if we give more than 1/10, it ceases to be tithe and that was why Jesus said we should give willingly not by force and so if you are still paying tithe then that means you’re not ready to let your righteousness exceed that of the pharasees

  11. To begin with, I will like Joshua Adjei to answer this question for Ghanaians. Are you, Mr Joshua Adjei, Wiser than God? Isaiah 55:8-9.
People become furious whenever the issue of tithing is raised. I ask myself this simple question, why are human beings that so rigid to be corrected? Many advocates of tithing have tried a lot to tell us, the only occupation during the institution tithing was farming. This is neither here nor there. There was different occupations. Joseph was sold to traders(Genesis 37). So what is our dear bro, Joshua Adjei telling Ghanaians i.e how many Ghanaians are farmers?
Has he also forgotten that as early as Genesis 6,we learned that, Noah was a carpenter? But with all these, God never demanded products of these occupations? God wanted men to tithe with farm produce and farm produce only…Leviticus 27:30-34; Deuteronomy 14:22-29. Accept the truth and it will set you free.(2 Corinthians 3:4-14(5-7)
