Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced that the government has acquired metal detectors as part of a strengthened crackdown on illegal firearms in the country.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Terlabi said the new equipment will significantly boost the ability of security agencies to detect hidden weapons.

“We now have metal detectors, so now we can detect wherever firearms are. We will use intel, and if we get the firearms or get hold of you, you will face the full rigours of the law,” he said.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that the government had already given gun owners sufficient opportunity to surrender unlicensed weapons under the ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme.

“The door has been opened for people to return the guns. This government is serious when it comes to this,” he stressed.

He added that security agencies are also intensifying surveillance at the country’s borders to prevent the smuggling of new weapons.

“Now we are working seriously at the borders for imported ones to be seized,” he said.

As part of efforts to enhance law enforcement capacity, the government is procuring more metal detection machines for the police and other security agencies.

“We are purchasing metal detection machines that will be given to the police and other security agencies,” he revealed.

Mr. Terlabi issued a stern warning to those still holding onto illegal firearms.

“If you don’t bring the guns and we get intelligence that you possess a gun, we will come for it. If you are illegally keeping a weapon, the law will take its course,” he cautioned.

He reiterated the government’s firm commitment to reducing the proliferation of illegal arms and ensuring all weapons in circulation are properly registered and accounted for.
