A 26-year-old cobbler, Thomas Opoku, popularly called Akwasi Dekye, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Bekwai Circuit Court for robbing a student at the Kokofu Nursing Training at gunpoint at Kokofu Bedoma in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Opoku was convicted on Thursday, August 6, 2026, on charges of Conspiracy to Commit Crime and Robbery contrary to Sections 23(1) and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The prosecution told the court that on June 12, 2026, at about 12:15 am, Opoku and another suspect, Agye Nyame, who is now on the run, attacked Divine Adu Boaheng near Kokofu Nursing Training School while he was returning from Bedomaise.
The court heard that the accused, armed with a single-barreled gun, robbed the victim of an Infinix Smart 6 valued at GHC 1,400.00 and GHC 400.00 in cash.
Police arrested Opoku on June 18, 2026, at Kokofu Lorry Station after he was identified by the complainant. The stolen phone was retrieved, and Opoku admitted the offence in his caution statement.
Presiding Judge, His Honour Issac Appiatu, handed down the 15-year sentence. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the second suspect, Agye Nyame.
