The People’s Alliance for Government and Accountability (PAGA) has called on Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to take steps to clear his name following allegations levelled against him by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.
However, with Mr Afenyo-Markin having already initiated legal action over the allegations, PAGA says the matter must now be addressed through the appropriate legal and accountability processes.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, PAGA Co-Convenor, Kofi Dapaah, said the Minority Leader occupies a critical position in Ghana’s governance structure and therefore must ensure that the allegations are properly addressed.
He said the organisation was concerned about allegations suggesting that Mr Afenyo-Markin may have demanded money, a private settlement or other favours from the GoldBod CEO or persons connected to the institution.
PAGA is therefore calling for clarity on the claims and urging Mr Gyamfi to provide evidence to support the allegations through the appropriate channels.
According to Mr Dapaah, such serious allegations should not be allowed to remain as political accusations without being subjected to proper scrutiny.
He said if the GoldBod CEO has evidence to support his claims, it should be presented before the relevant authorities and, where appropriate, the court as the legal process unfolds.
PAGA’s position comes after Mr Afenyo-Markin filed separate suits over allegations made against him, signalling his decision to seek redress through the courts.
The group also called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that reported losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme are fully accounted for and that measures are put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Mr Dapaah stressed that the controversy surrounding the GoldBod transactions should not distract from the broader need for transparency and accountability in the management of the country’s gold resources.
The Effutu Member of Parliament disclosed the lawsuit on Monday, August 24, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting following weeks of public exchanges between the two over GoldBod’s operations and reported financial losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The disagreement intensified after Mr Gyamfi allegedly described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” in response to Mr Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of the programme and his demands for answers over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025.
