The Catechist of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Trinity Congregation at Goaso in the Ahafo Region, Ernest Nti Twum, has called on Christian youth across the country to take an active role in protecting the environment.
He said the growing destruction of the environment poses a serious threat to Ghana and requires collective efforts, particularly from the younger generation.
Mr Nti Twum made the call in an interview with Adom News at Goaso during the 39th Annual District Conference of the Young People’s Guild (YPG) of the Goaso District.
He identified illegal mining, illegal logging and indiscriminate littering among activities contributing significantly to environmental degradation.
According to him, Christian youth can play an important role by educating their peers and communities on the need to protect the environment and adopt responsible environmental practices.
He urged the youth to intensify public education and sensitisation efforts while supporting government agencies and private organisations working to address environmental challenges.
Mr Nti Twum stressed that environmental protection should not be left solely to government, describing it as a shared responsibility that requires the involvement of individuals, communities and institutions.
Meanwhile, the President of the YPG Goaso District, Nkrumah-Odoi Josephson, called on the government to strictly enforce sanitation laws and punish offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.
He expressed concern that some people continue to destroy the environment with impunity because existing laws are not being effectively enforced.
Mr Nkrumah-Odoi urged authorities to strengthen enforcement measures to ensure that individuals who engage in activities that degrade the environment are held accountable.
