Clad in red armbands, the miners staged a protest against the alleged NAIMOS imposters, urging authorities to act swiftly before the situation escalates.

They claim these individuals frequently move from site to site, demanding money under the pretext of enforcing government’s anti-galamsey operations.

According to the aggrieved workers, they are uncertain whether the government has established any additional taskforce aside from NAIMOS, as the alleged imposters continue to harass them.

Speaking to Adom News, the miners warned that they may be forced to confront the perpetrators if authorities fail to intervene.

“We know NAIMOS is the taskforce established by the government to fight illegal mining, not licensed small-scale miners, and even they don’t extort money. But recently, some men came to seize our equipment and demanded money. After our checks, we realised they were not from NAIMOS but imposters tarnishing the government’s image,” they stated.

The miners stressed that they support the government’s fight against illegal mining but condemned the actions of individuals exploiting the exercise to extort money.

They cautioned that failure by authorities to address the issue could lead to violent confrontations in the area.

Abdulai Chipser, a site manager at one of the mining concessions in Manso Kaniago, alleged that the imposters visit their sites at least twice a week to demand money and sometimes confiscate equipment parts.

“Just recently, they came to my site, arrested two of my workers, and took away some of our equipment, demanding GH¢200,000 before they released them. The last time, they took GH¢50,000,” he lamented.

Mr. Chipser further alleged that a District Chief Executive (DCE) from another district has also been leading groups of heavily built men to the area to extort money from miners.

“That DCE is not from this enclave, yet he comes here for money. One day, we will beat him for Ghanaians to know,” he threatened.

He also claimed that the said DCE openly told them they are “enriching themselves before the end of their term” and cannot be stopped.

Mr. Chipser has therefore called on President John Dramani Mahama and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to intervene.

Ghana tilting towards the abyss while waiting for doomsday https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-tilting-towards-the-abyss-while-waiting-for-doomsday/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 19:16:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657089

Ghana saddens me. We have squandered almost every opportunity. We have turned our potential into a liability.

We have failed in every conceivable measure of governance. The Nana Addo administration ushered in gangster democracy, a governance system whereby corruption is put on steroids.

This has led to the existence of a binary competitive kleptocracy. We have replaced meritocracy and excellence with mediocrity by establishing naked favoritism, sectionalism, ethnocentrism(tribalism) and crass partisanship.

We have accepted this nasty toxic culture by introducing cheap Ghanaian lexicon such as “connection” and “protocol” to support diabolical behaviors.

We are watching the collapse of the social contract of a country through our pathetic apathy and our loss of shame, dignity, decency, and confidence. We are unable to stop our capital city’s slide to a slum.

Accra is now a slum capital of Ghana and Kumasi is now a village ghetto market. We have lost any ability to stop the bastardization and ghettoization of our life and society.

Today, Ghanaian cities and towns have become museums of horror living and we are doing nothing about it.

The continued existence of Ghana as a functioning country is seriously in doubt. The governance structure has broken down.

The social contract has also broken down. There is virtually no serious leadership. There is a serious absence of management and professional expertise in dealing with the challenges facing the nation.

Appointed and elected officials lack knowledge of their roles and responsibilities. They have absolutely no ability to undertake their responsibilities and the roles in which they have been appointed to are above their grade of competence.

As a result, not much can be accomplished by them. Therefore the critical and important challenges facing the country cannot be tackled at all. Ghana is facing several existential issues. In addition, Ghana has a serious case of pathetic apathy within its citizenry.

They have lost any sense of self and hope and confidence in themselves, and they have no appetite to challenge the leadership to lead.

The challenges facing Ghana are listed below:

1. Massive corruption and stealing with impunity by civil Servants, politicians and political appointees, as well as other workers.

As a result of the complete absence of law and order. The corruption and theft is and continues unchecked because there is no interest in prosecuting or jailing anyone involved in what has become a normal way of life and an accepted style of living.

2. Galamsey, which is illegal mining of unprecedented level. Our environment, our rivers, our lands, and our forests are under destruction and this seeks to completely destroy our very existence.

This destruction has collapsed the social contract and has made aspects of our country ungovernable.

Galamsey, which leads to the production of gold, is unable to generate enough revenue to eclipse the cost to society in terms of the destruction of the environment, the rivers, the lands and the social structure, not to mention our basic farming and fishing culture.

3. Climate change, climate change is impacting the north leading to increased desertification and uncomfortable and frightening high temperatures being experienced in the whole country. No serious, deliberate effort is underway to arrest these life-threatening conditions.

4. Unemployment is massive, but what is even more frightening is disguised unemployment, or people pretending to be working. Approximately 75% to 80% of the working population, pretends to be working and this manifests itself in the presence of nasty, shanty and slum structures on the sides of streets, in front of houses turning every place in the country into a ghetto marketplace and turning Ghana into a slum country, and the capital into a slum city.

This pretense and so-called work activity(buy and sell or ktbt) is very costly to the nation because it only increases prices, creates inflation, and leads to poverty and squalor while making Ghana a very expensive country to live in with zero productivity outcome for the work they pretend to be doing.

Their habits and work structures lead to unsanitary conditions. Filth and low level living has engulfed the society and turned it into a backwards, low class country below even the third world conditions.

5. Inefficient and costly transportation management – The government has abdicated its responsibility in doing anything good with respect to roads and transportation.

It has completely shirked its responsibilities in maintaining the streets and roads of the country.

Indeed, it has decided that it would operate the most inefficient way of transportation by not maintaining and repairing roads, streets and bridges, instead spending billions of dollars to buy expensive, uneconomical gas-guzzling vehicles.

Unfortunately, the citizens do the same, and these vehicles last a short time and cost a lot to maintain because of the bad roads and streets.

Ghana is becoming more of an Ice Age country and therefore journeys that took two hours are now taking seven hours. We are slowing down due to corruption and incompetence and this is walking us back to the ice age.

6. Darkness in our cities. Ghana started putting street lights in the streets in the 60s. Today, our capital cities, Accra and Kumasi and others have no street lights and there is no effort by the government to replace the missing street lights.

There is no program, no policy, no action by the leadership to repair the street lights so that Ghana is dark in the night and therefore the cities have now become village ghettos.

The citizens have accepted and have not challenged the government to act to correct the situation and therefore this embarrassing and shameful spectacle has become normalized.

The people of Ghana have no shame, no confidence in themselves, and no courage to require the government to undertake its basic responsibility to maintain streetlights in our capital cities despite the people’s continued payment of taxes for the continued presence of streetlights in our country.

7. Flooding in our cities. When it rains, flooding takes place in our major cities, Accra, Kumasi, and elsewhere and there is no effort by the leadership to correct this serious problem which leads to loss of lives and livelihoods of many.

This is because there’s a clear absence of leadership. to handle basic, pressing problems facing the nation. It is clear that Ghana seriously lacks  leadership, management,  supervisory and operational skills, to deal with basic governance problems.

We are facing a situation where incompetence is meeting corruption at unprecedented levels.

8. Unclean, unhygienic and unsanitary conditions. Our respect for sanitary and hygienic conditions is below acceptable levels. Sanitation is low on the radar of Ghanaians’ pressing problems.

Human faeces fill the gutters, and drains of Ghana’s streets are not swept leading to unbearable miasma wafting through the air while people eat unconcerned in so-called high class restaurants like Buka in Accra.

Trash is not removed, drains and gutters are not cleaned and most places, including eating places and areas where there are quality restaurants have smelling human faces because of the presence of human faces in the gutters and drains, which are not cleaned.

There is virtually no effort by the government to correct the situation.

9. The government’s maintenance of parks and gardens and the lawns on the sides of the streets has stopped for several years. Grass is not cut and manicured. The place looks nasty. The place looks like a ghetto.

The whole place is bastardized and there are signs of poverty and squalor everywhere in the streets of Accra.

Increasingly we are facing a culture of Zongoism, where the worst form of unclean, unhygienic, unsanitary and nasty living is prevalent, and there is virtually no effort by the government to correct the situation.

10. Lack of order and indisciplined society. Leadership has allowed the whole country to be turned into a marketplace. Nasty structures on the sides of streets, in front of houses have turned us into a slum country.

We are facing a new era of low level living and this has become normalized. No respect for ourselves and we show no shame of how nasty our cities look, how nasty our environments look, how nasty our homes look because we have normalized poverty and squalor.

We are experiencing the worst form of low living with pockets of first world housing conditions to remind us as to the stark inequalities of our society.

11. We do not respect excellence, so we have collapsed excellence in our educational systems. Universities and high schools have become glorified elementary schools, producing rejects, and vacuous graduates.

There’s a painful, ignorant, conceptual belief that if one wears the jersey of Real Madrid one can play like Ronaldo of Real Madrid. We have therefore filled our top high schools with 4-5 times the number of students appropriate to produce excellence since they believe they can pack all the kids there irrespective of their ability or potential in order to become the high achieving and high paying professionals of society.

The dumb free senior high school system, poorly conceived, poorly implemented and poorly supervised, continues to produce mediocre results and a painful spectacle to the well informed.

There is the poverty mindset and thinking that if something is free it must be good. since they think if you put any useless person in a so-called previously excellent school, that dumb person can all of a sudden become a brilliant achiever.

Despite the fact that there’s the absence of resources to support the loading of large numbers of students in those previously prestigious schools, and turning the whole educational system into ghetto elementary schools, and thereby destroying the whole essence of excellence in education.

12. Failing Metropolitan Authorities and local government. City governments such as Accra Metropolitan Authority and Kumasi Metropolitan Authority are nonfunctioning, inefficient and corrupt.

They have become the focus of criminal activities. They have lost their direction. They appear not to know why they exist.

They appoint gangsters, criminals and thugs who go there with only one motive, to steal whatever they can get. They lack the requisite education, training, experience, ethics and competence to handle their responsibilities.

They have no intention of making the city a better place. So the cities continue deteriorating to the lowest level one can imagine.

13. The healthcare system has virtually collapsed and is nonfunctioning for the people who need it. It’s been replaced by a cash and carry system that is completely unsupported by financial resources, and therefore cannot deliver the appropriate results.

The government has a limited desire to improve the existing hospitals and clinics to make it functioning for the society, and therefore people falling sick are likely to die prematurely.

There is no serious effort to correct this sad but critical issue facing the nation as well.

14. The corrupt law enforcement system. The law enforcement system is corrupt from top to bottom. The government has deliberately set up the police system to be corrupt.

The law enforcement personnel lack the proper education, training and ethical consideration to perform their responsibilities.

They also lack the resources appropriate for the challenges of their responsibilities. Further, the legal system has created an opportunity for the law enforcement officials to be corrupt by not allowing them to have a ticketing or charging system when infringements occur on the streets or in public.

The lack of resources can be observed by looking at the police stations and seeing the streets of Ghana showing a lack of vehicles, and equipment to deal with the challenges of policing. Ghana’s police force is currently equipped to deal with police duties of 1900s and not of 2026.

15.  The Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and Quasi-Governmental Organizations. The Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and quasi-governmental organizations appear to have been deliberately structured as unconnected and non-integrated systems, rather than as cohesive entities working together to deliver the vision and goals of government.

They operate in silos, functioning independently of one another. There is a clear absence of communication systems that can seamlessly and efficiently connect these organizations, as is common in modern business environments.

It would be a surprise to observe the existence of an organizational structure that promotes coordination and accountability, and ensures efficiency, effectiveness and stellar outcomes. There appears to be a deliberate strategy by some political leaders and public servants to maintain this fragmented system, thereby enabling corrupt and criminal activities to go unchecked and unaccounted for.

One would expect the existence of an integrated email or communication system linking all ministries and agencies at the click of a button, facilitating the efficient dissemination of policies, practices, procedures, and programs.

Furthermore, there is a lack of comprehensive enterprise reporting systems to ensure that government activities are properly accounted for and reported in a professional and transparent manner.

The absence of a robust financial reporting system, coupled with weak and inadequate control mechanisms and a lack of responsible leadership, has created an environment where state functions are deliberately distorted for personal gain by some political leaders and civil servants.

In addition, these institutions continue to rely on outdated and obsolete policies, practices, programs, and procedures that are ineffective, uneconomical, and detrimental to the people of Ghana.

There has been little to no effort to update, improve, or modernize these systems. What we are witnessing is a nation in distress, reflected in the state of its ministries characterized by rot, decay, dilapidation, and systemic failure resembling institutions frozen in time over 60 years ago.

16. Civil Service and Public Service

The civil and public servants who supported Kwame Nkrumah in executing major national projects are long gone.

The era of distinguished civil servants such as A. L. Adu, E. M. Debrah, Amonoo, Mensah-Wilmott, and others who contributed to the emergence of Ghana as the Black Star of Africa—has passed. Gone are the days when a significant number of top civil servants were products of Mfantsipim School.

Following the coups led by Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana experienced a massive brain drain, losing many of its best and brightest professionals.

This loss was followed by a decline in standards, with replacements often lacking the ethical grounding, patriotism, and professional competence required for excellence.

This loss of personnel led to a replacement by a  low grade of professionals and political leaders.

Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration(GIMPA), originally established to provide continuous professional education, training, and development for civil servants, has, in recent times, deviated from its core mandate of improving and enhancing the skillsets of civil servants.

It has increasingly been perceived as an institution focused on producing low content education, vacuous graduates mass certification instead of rigorous professional training and skills improvement.

This shift has deprived the civil service of essential skills while rewarding institutional leadership with financial and reputational gains, often without corresponding improvements in quality.

Civil servants, across various administrations, have in many instances supported and participated in corrupt practices alongside political leaders.

They often provide the technical knowledge, systems, and methods that enable corruption to thrive. As a result, parts of the civil service have become a burden on the state rather than an asset.

Work practices are frequently inefficient and ineffective, yielding limited positive outcomes due to declining competence levels and problematic mindsets.

We continue to implement archaic and outdated policies, practices, programs, procedures and processes which are costly and lead to negative outcomes.

17. The Legal System and the Judiciary

Ghana’s legal system has struggled to modernize over the past 60 years. It often fails to deliver timely justice, even for members within its own ranks. A modern legal system should be able to provide accessible databases summarizing cases by type, region, court, and duration. However, such systems are largely absent.

Court cases frequently take years to conclude if they conclude at all, resulting in frustration and significant financial losses for litigants. Justice is routinely delayed, and as the well-known principle states, justice delayed is justice denied.

While there are many dedicated and honest professionals within the legal system, the presence of corrupt officials and unethical practices undermines public confidence.

There is an urgent need for reforms to address these challenges, remove misconduct, and restore trust in the judiciary as a pillar of justice and accountability in Ghana

It is laughable that a country of 30-35million people will have a Supreme Court of Justices equivalent to two football teams. Such wasteful, bloated bureaucracy, a hallmark of useless political leadership and an uncaring politician makes a mockery of the whole judicial system.

We continue to see insensitivity and waste in the face of abject poverty while the elite live a lavish lifestyle without any benefit to society. Ghana does not need anything more than 7-9 Justices and this needs to be corrected immediately.

18. Absence of civic and adult education. Ghana faces massive corruption and ill discipline. In addition, there is a culture of lying to support the stealing brigade enterprise in Ghana. The average Ghanaian is a thief and a liar.

The bloodstream of a Ghanaian has been infected with this cancerous behavior of stealing and lying. The DNA of the Ghanaian has been corrupted and infected by a virus of stealing and lying.

There is no civic and adult education taking place in Ghana to correct this dangerous and traumatic experience facing Ghanaians. Society has crumbled to the extent that lying and falsehood has become normalized and this negative behavior and attitude has eaten into the fabric of Society.

Increasingly, Ghanaians are using their knowledge and abilities to do criminal or illegal activities or to defraud one another and this is as a result of the corrupt leadership in the last five decades.

We must correct these horrible and nasty attitudes through serious civic and adult education reforms.

What Next?
Ghana must undertake a series of serious, profound fundamental actions in order to address these existential issues discussed above.

In the first place, serious law and order must be established by undertaking a comprehensive review and implementation of a new law and order system which seeks to address historical and past criminal activity with serious punishment.

Penalties must include decades of imprisonment and bankruptcy of criminals, their families, their friends, their cronies and those commingling their stolen assets with them.

Secondly, we must look at the current law enforcement system and make it responsive to the current situation with appropriate resources in terms of manpower, education, training, and state-of-the art equipment, including high-tech computers, databases and forensic architecture.

Reliance on myopic solutions such as EOCO, the so-called Office of the Special Prosecutor as a solution is wrong-headed. Rather, a well-thought of comprehensive approach is needed.

Law enforcement methods which are preventive must be emphasized. People must be made to pay time for crime and that doctrine must be strongly emphasized.

The principle of deterrence must be restored.

There is an urgent need for major reforms in several areas. Constitutional reforms must curtail unnecessary bloated bureaucracies and expanded, expensive programs.

Ghana does not need 275 constituencies and can do with a maximum of 150 constituencies of equal size in population. Ghana does not need 16 regions. It can do with 5 regions. Ghana does not need over 100 ministers, it can do with 30 ministers.

Apart from justices of the Supreme Court who may retire on their full salaries, no other group of people be they parliamentarians, military, bank of Ghana officials, etc. should be allowed to retire on their full salaries.

These are unconscionable, costly, expensive and unsustainable expenditure helping to bankrupt the nation.

The other reforms are: Public sector reforms, Judiciary reforms, Legal reforms, Educational reforms, healthcare reforms, tax reforms, industrial reforms, land reforms, local government reforms, extractive Industry reforms(in particular, oil, gas and mining), political reforms, police reforms, prison reforms, pension reforms, and agricultural reforms

NAS gives Ministry of Defence technical advice on GAF ambulance procurement https://www.adomonline.com/nas-gives-ministry-of-defence-technical-advice-on-gaf-ambulance-procurement/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 19:13:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657085 In a move to ensure transparency and value for money, a high-level delegation from the National Ambulance Service has briefed the Ministry of Defence on the upcoming technical evaluation of ambulances destined for the Ghana Armed Forces.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters (The Square), was led by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service, Dr. George Kofi Owusu.

He met with the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, the Chief Director, and other senior directors to discuss the roadmap for the acquisition.

The primary focus of the discussions was to ensure the ambulances meet the specific operational requirements of the military.

Dr. Owusu revealed that, following legal advice from the Attorney General regarding a previous procurement of 30 ambulances in 2016, the NAS Board has decided to involve an independent third party for quality assurance.

The State Transport Company has been engaged to conduct a rigorous technical assessment of the vehicles. This step is intended to provide an unbiased verification of the ambulances’ mechanical and medical readiness.

Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi commended the NAS for its commitment to due process, stressing that maintaining high national standards and transparency remains the government’s top priority in the procurement process.

Following the briefing, the Deputy Minister granted official clearance for the NAS to proceed with the STC-led technical assessment. The collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the National Ambulance Service, and the Ministry of Defence marks a significant step toward strengthening the emergency medical capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Tinny declares Lord Kenya the “Greatest Ghanaian Rapper Of All Time” https://www.adomonline.com/tinny-declares-lord-kenya-the-greatest-ghanaian-rapper-of-all-time/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 19:10:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657079 Veteran Ghanaian rapper Tinny has declared musician-turned-evangelist Lord Kenya as the unmatched king of Ghanaian rap history.

Addressing questions about the evolution and current state of Ghana’s music industry, the “Aletse” hitmaker did not hesitate when asked who stands at the top of the hierarchy.

For Tinny, Lord Kenya represents the total package that few in the industry’s history can rival, especially in style, lyrics and stagecraft.

Tinny said Lord Kenya’s dominance was not based on one specific skill, but rather a rare combination of essential qualities.

“He gets the style, stagecraft, lyrics and everything,” Tinny said in an interview on Hot FM, stressing that Lord Kenya’s all-round artistry set a benchmark that still stands today.

Lord Kenya, who dominated the music scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s before transitioning into ministry, remains one of the most decorated rappers in the country’s history.

Tinny’s endorsement adds significant weight to Lord Kenya’s legacy, especially coming from a peer who is also regarded as a pioneer of Ga rap and a heavyweight in the industry.

As discussions about the state of the music industry continue, Tinny’s comments serve as a reminder of the high standards of performance and creativity set by legends of the Hiplife era.

Greater Accra Education Directorate intensifies fight against examination malpractice ahead of WASSCE and BECE https://www.adomonline.com/greater-accra-education-directorate-intensifies-fight-against-examination-malpractice-ahead-of-wassce-and-bece/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 16:17:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657049 The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, has renewed calls for collective action to eliminate examination malpractice in Ghana.

Speaking at a sensitisation programme organised by the Ghana Education Service, she described examination malpractice as a serious challenge that undermines academic integrity, devalues certificates, and slows national development.

She stressed that the fight against the canker requires the active involvement of all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, students, religious and traditional leaders, security agencies, the media, and examination bodies such as the West African Examinations Council.

She further encouraged parents to reduce the workload on candidates at home to allow them adequate time to prepare for their examinations, while also discouraging any form of malpractice during exams.

Meanwhile, some District Directors of Education in the Greater Accra Region have intensified efforts to address the growing concern of examination malpractice as the WASSCE continues and the BECE approaches next week.

The region is currently ranked sixth on the examination malpractice league table, a situation the Directorate describes as worrying and unacceptable.

In response, a targeted sensitisation campaign has been launched for District Directors of Education and examination officers to tackle the issue and remove the stigma associated with the region’s current position.

The Regional Examinations Officer, Moses Yaw Omane, speaking on the league table ranking, emphasized the need for urgent and collective action to reverse the trend.

He added that, as the nation’s capital, Greater Accra should not be associated with examination malpractice. He assured that the Directorate is implementing strong measures to restore integrity and ensure the region clears its name.

We have enough aviation fuel to meet demand — Edward Bawa https://www.adomonline.com/we-have-enough-aviation-fuel-to-meet-demand-edward-bawa/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 15:57:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657030 The Managing Director of GOIL PLC, Edward Bawa, has assured stakeholders in the aviation industry that there is no shortage of aviation fuel in the country.

His comments come in response to growing concerns about potential supply constraints and their impact on flight operations.

Speaking to Joy Business on the sidelines of GOIL’s Safety Week celebration, Mr. Bawa dismissed fears of any disruption, stressing that the company has sufficient stocks to meet current and future demand.

“We have enough aviation fuel to meet the demands of our players,” he stated.

Uplift programme empowers youth with skills and employment pathways https://www.adomonline.com/uplift-programme-empowers-youth-with-skills-and-employment-pathways/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 15:55:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657011 Social Enterprise Ghana, in partnership with Africa Forward, has organised its Uplift Programme aimed at equipping young people with market-relevant skills, job opportunities, and entrepreneurship support.

The initiative seeks to prepare participants for dignified and sustainable employment, while also connecting them to internships and work opportunities.

Africa Forward is a youth-focused intervention designed to address rising unemployment across the continent, particularly among young people, women, and marginalised groups who often face limited access to meaningful jobs.

The programme also contributes to the Mastercard Foundation’s broader target of enabling 30 million young Africans to access meaningful employment by 2030.

Under the Uplift Programme, between 150 and 200 young people are expected to receive training in digital skills to help them earn sustainable incomes and build long-term careers.

Organisers say the initiative will be expanded to cover additional skill areas in a bid to reach more young people nationwide.

They add that beyond training, the focus remains on linking beneficiaries to real opportunities that will enable them to thrive, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity, particularly encouraging the participation of women and persons with disabilities.

The training was partnered by FirstBank Ghana, Africa Technical Apprenticeship Network, Built Financial Technologies and Impact Foundation.

Supreme Court dismisses Wesley Girls’ motion to strike out suit over religious directives https://www.adomonline.com/supreme-court-dismisses-wesley-girls-motion-to-strike-out-suit-over-religious-directives/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 15:50:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656993 The Supreme Court has dismissed an application by Wesley Girls’ High School seeking to strike out a suit challenging the constitutionality of some of its religious directives, clearing the way for the substantive case to proceed.

The preliminary objection, filed by the school, argued that the Board of Governors, named as a defendant in the suit, lacked the legal capacity to sue or be sued and should therefore be struck out of the proceedings.

Counsel for the school contended that the appropriate party to be sued was the Trustees of the Methodist Church Ghana, rather than the Board of Governors.

However, delivering its ruling on April 29, a seven-member panel of the apex court, presided over by Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, dismissed the objection and upheld the submissions of the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, and counsel for the plaintiff, Abdul Aziz Gomda.

The court held that the Board of Governors was a proper party to the suit and competent to be sued, effectively allowing the constitutional challenge to proceed.

Court orders response

Following the ruling, the court directed the school to file its response to the substantive claims within two weeks.

The case, which has attracted public interest due to its implications for religious practices in educational institutions, has been adjourned indefinitely.

Panel composition

Other members of the panel were Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Senyo Dzamefe, Kwaku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu, Richard Adjei-Frimpong, and Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei.

Akwatia MP criticizes NPP over power outage commentary https://www.adomonline.com/akwatia-mp-criticizes-npp-over-power-outage-commentary/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 15:15:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656994 The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (New Patriotic Party) over its commentary on the ongoing power outages.

Speaking on JoyNews’s AM Show, he expressed surprise at what he described as attempts by the party to politicise the situation.

According to him, based on the party’s record in government, the NPP should be the last to speak on issues relating to power supply.

“When you check the data, they are the last people who should be talking about this issue,” he said.

Mr Baidoo argued that the power challenges being experienced in places like Kumasi are not new, insisting that such issues existed during the NPP’s eight years in office.

He questioned what interventions were made during that period, especially given the strong electoral support the party received from the area.

He further maintained that if the problems had been resolved previously, the current administration would not have inherited them.

Mr Baidoo added that it is unrealistic to expect the present government to fix within a short period what he claims was not addressed over eight years.

KASEC students protest unapproved WASSCE fee https://www.adomonline.com/kasec-students-protest-unapproved-wassce-fee/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 15:10:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656967 Some final-year students of the Kadjebi Asato Senior High School (KASEC) in the Oti Region risk missing out on this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) following the imposition of a GH¢500 fee by the Headmaster of the school, Cole Emmanuel Kwabla.

The Daily Graphic gathered that all 956 candidates had been compelled to pay GH¢500 each for the examination, contrary to the Ghana Education Service (GES) directive.

While some students confirmed they had already paid the amount, others said they were yet to pay due to financial constraints.

One of the students explained that the amount was intended to cover the WASSCE practicals.

“The school administration said any student who fails to pay the money will not be allowed to sign the final document to write the WASSCE.

I managed to pay mine last week, so they allowed me to sign,” the Visual Arts student said.

Context

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) recently released GH¢22.3 million to all Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) to cover the fees for the 2026 WASSCE practicals.

The amount was part of three cheques, totalling GH¢199.47 million, released to settle outstanding payments for perishable supplies to SHSs/SHTSs and other educational needs.

The payment was to ensure that all 2026 WASSCE practicals were fully supported, including the provision of the required materials and other essential resources.

The GETFund emphasised that the payment reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring no candidate would be denied access to any aspect of the 2026 WASSCE.

Non-compliance

Meanwhile, a highly placed source at KASEC confirmed to the Daily Graphic that some final-year students who could not pay the amount being charged by the headmaster were anxious about the uncertainty surrounding their participation in the WASSCE.

Ghana news subscription

“As of today, students who are unable to pay such money cannot sign up to write the exams and this is worrying because it is affecting their preparation for the examination,” the source said.

Some teachers at KASEC, who spoke to the Daily Graphic on condition of anonymity, said the collection of GH¢500 from final-year students ahead of this year’s WASSCE was not only unethical but also likely to foster a sense of entitlement among students during the examination.

Alleged extortion

Sources close to the school administration accused the headmaster of using clandestine means to extort money from students.

For instance, one of the sources alleged that the headmaster charged students who were not placed in KASEC GH¢500 for admission without receipts.

Again, the source said each of the current first-year students was charged GH¢200 for admission processing without receipts.

“Last semester, the headmaster made each student pay GH¢50 as a development levy, but no receipts were issued, and there is no evidence of the usage of the funds.

“In addition, he sells hymnals to all students at GH¢50 without receipts,” another highly-placed source said.

Response

When the Daily Graphic contacted the headmaster for his side of the story, he did not deny any of the allegations, except to say that he was not in a position to give any details about the payments made by the students.

Ghana news subscription

When asked whether the allegations levelled against him were true, he referred the Daily Graphic team to the PTA Chairman for any information regarding the collection of money from final-year students.

In a rather uncompromising posture, he stressed that he needed approval from the Oti Regional Directorate of Education before he could provide any information about such payments.

“I am not the Regional Director of Education; I am not the District Director of Education; I am not the Publication Relations Officer,” he stressed and ended the call.

PTA chairman’s denial

Meanwhile, when the Daily Graphic spoke to the Chairman of the KASEC PTA, Michael Aboagye, he said the association had no hand in collecting money from third-year students.

“As I speak to you now, I have been in a sick bed at the hospital for the past three months.

The PTA has not authorised the collection of any money from final-year students.

“What I know is that the headmaster called PTA members and told them that the school will collect GH¢500 from the final-year students for WASSCE practicals, but I told him point-blank that I am not part of it, so if he gets into trouble, the PTA cannot defend him,” he said.

Two shot dead as suspected robbers ambush police during investigation to retrieve buried illegal weapons https://www.adomonline.com/two-shot-dead-as-suspected-robbers-ambush-police-during-investigation-to-retrieve-buried-illegal-weapons/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 14:27:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656964 The police have killed two suspected armed robbers who led them to a site at Yizesi, near Fumbisi in the Upper East Region, to retrieve weapons hidden underground only to be fired upon by unknown persons in nearby bushes.

The two – Sumaila Munkaila and Umaro Musah, who the police said had attempted to escape, had sustained injuries when the police repelled the attack.

They were taken to the hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the shootout, the team proceeded with the search and recovered one CZ805 assault rifle marked CO74258 loaded and ready with 14 rounds of 5.56x39mm ammunition, one AK 47 assault rifle loaded and ready with 28 rounds of 7.62x39mm with additional 28 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, totaling 56 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, one pump action gun with six (6) rounds of “BB” cartridges and one single barrel gun, concealed in sacks and buried underground.

A police situational report, a copy of which has been seen by Graphic Online said four jacket attires were also recovered “and the same were identified by the suspects as the attire they used to commit the robberies”.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command had gathered intelligence on suspect Sumaila Munkaila, alias Guda, as a wanted man in connection with a series of roadblock robberies along the Obuasi and Manso–Nyinahin stretch in the Ashanti Region, and was believed to be hiding in Tamale in the Northern Region.

“An intelligence-led operation was conducted on 25/04/2026 at Tamale, led by senior officer and other ranks. About 20:55 hours, at Vitin in Tamale, suspect Sumaila Munkaila, alias Guda, aged 37, was arrested. During interrogation, he admitted to the offences and other robberies, including the attack on the convoy of Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam, the Chiana-Pio, on 20/07/2025, The Buipe–Tamale stretch roadblock robbery on 21/04/2026 and the Yizesi–Fumbisi roadblock robbery on 22/04/2026,” it said.

The report said he further implicated Umaro Musah, Tongude, Sumaila, and Berra, all believed to be Fulani indigenes.

Consequently, the police said the suspect led the police to arrest Umaro Musah at Savelugu at about 23:30 hours the same day.

It said both suspects indicated that their weapons had been concealed underground in a bush at Yizesi, near Fumbisi in the Upper East Region, claiming they buried the weapons after the Yizesi–Fumbisi robbery.

“On 26/04/2026, the team continued with the exercise. Both suspects led police to the said location at Yizesi for retrieval of the weapons. During the search, unknown persons opened fire from within the bush, and the suspects attempted to escape through the bush,” it said.

The report explained that the police team returned fire in self-defence, during which both suspects, Sumaila Munkaila and Umaro Musah, sustained gunshot injuries.

“In the process, an officer also sustained minor injury and is currently receiving treatment. The other suspect believed to have sustained gunshot wounds managed to escape.

“The injured suspects were rushed to the Tamale Government Hospital for medical treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty.

Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accomplices to face justice.

Missing eight-year-old girl found dead at Sefwi-Asawinso https://www.adomonline.com/missing-eight-year-old-girl-found-dead-at-sefwi-asawinso/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 14:26:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656945 A search for an eight-year-old girl who went missing at Sefwi-Asawinso has ended in tragedy after her body was discovered less than 24 hours later.

Information gathered suggests that her lifeless body was later found in a cocoa farm on the outskirts of Sefwi-Asawinso.

The Assemblyman for the Asawinso-Sefwi line electoral area, Adu Stephen, disclosed that the deceased, Josphine Ayitey, went missing from her home on Sunday afternoon while she was with her playmate.

A search for her proved unsuccessful until her body was found dumped in a cocoa farm the following day.

An eyewitness, Dr Daud, told Adom News that he observed marks suggesting her neck had been twisted, although there were no visible bloodstains on the body.

She was found naked in a prone position in a cocoa farm near Nkwakaw, a suburb of Sefwi-Asawinso.

The incident has reignited fear among residents, with some noting a worrying pattern of similar cases in the area. Community members say the development brings back memories of past incidents locally referred to as “One Head One Kia,” which had previously caused widespread panic in parts of the Sefwi enclave.

Residents are calling for swift investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding the young girl’s death and to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Current power outages are not good news, but… – NDC Communication Team Member https://www.adomonline.com/current-power-outages-are-not-good-news-but-ndc-communication-team-member/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 14:04:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656943 A Communication Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress), Bernard Anim Piesie, has called on Ghanaians to exercise patience with the government despite ongoing power outages.

Speaking on UTV Ghana in Accra, he acknowledged that the current situation is challenging but urged the public to remain understanding.

“The current power outages are not good news, but we should bear with the government,” he said.

According to him, the outages are largely due to overloaded transformers, which are currently being replaced—an exercise that requires temporary power shutdowns.

He explained that the high voltage levels in some areas make it necessary to switch off power during maintenance to prevent further damage.

Mr Anim Piesie noted that the situation is partly a result of longstanding issues within the energy sector, including past planning and management challenges, as well as concerns related to the Akosombo Dam.

He, however, commended the government’s efforts, stating that progress is being made, including the restoration of four turbines, some of which involve modern technology.

While acknowledging the difficulties caused by the outages, he cautioned against excessive blame, urging stakeholders to focus on solutions..

NDC Women’s Organiser frustrating me because I was chosen over her brother – Ejisu MCE alleges https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-womens-organiser-frustrating-me-because-i-was-chosen-over-her-brother-ejisu-mce-alleges/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 13:23:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656920 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ejisu, Jerryne Asante, has accused the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress), Gloria Huze, of leading a sustained campaign to frustrate her and force her out of office.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MCE claimed the alleged actions stem from dissatisfaction over her appointment, insisting that Madam Huze had wanted her brother to be named MCE instead.

“It is all because she wanted her brother to be MCE but he wasn’t appointed, so she has vowed to use every means possible to frustrate me until I leave office,” she alleged.

Madam Asante further accused Madam Huze of repeatedly undermining her authority and inciting party members against her.

“She has been to my office to insult and harass me, vowing to lead a demonstration against me because they say they don’t want me,” she said.

According to the MCE, the situation has escalated into what she describes as deliberate attempts to destabilise the local administration, including calls for the removal of key officials.

“She will be inciting people against me, demanding the removal of the Presiding Member and the Coordinating Director,” she claimed.

She also cited an incident in which rubbish was allegedly dumped in the middle of a road in Ejisu, an act she believes was politically motivated to tarnish her image.

“They called me out and even attached President John Dramani Mahama’s name, saying sanitation in Ejisu is bad. I ensured those involved were arrested, yet the same people accuse me of giving the party a bad name,” she stated.

The MCE further alleged misconduct relating to the handling of state resources, questioning attempts to take over facilities without due process.

“If you need a warehouse, I can help you get one. But you don’t take the law into your own hands. What is my crime in protecting state properties?” she asked.

She also rejected claims that she was behind the destruction that occurred during a recent invasion of her office. “You invade my office, destroy property, and then turn around to accuse me of doing it myself,” she said.

Despite the tensions, Madam Asante called for calm among party supporters, urging patience and unity. “The government cannot give all of us what we want at the same time,” she noted.

Speaking on Badwam TV on Adom TV, he described the allegations as false and an attempt to divert public attention.

According to him, suggestions that people from the camp of Mahamudu Bawumia intend to punish MPs who supported Kennedy Agyapong are baseless.

“It is never true. That is just a way of shifting attention,” he said.

Mr Nartey stressed that the party remains united and will support all its Members of Parliament, regardless of who they backed during the internal elections.

He explained that when the time comes for parliamentary primaries, all sitting MPs will be given the opportunity to contest, with the party rallying behind them.

He emphasized that the NPP’s focus is on building a strong party rather than promoting individual interests.

“We are building a party, not individuals,” he added.

The visit, held in a solemn but respectful atmosphere, formed part of efforts to properly honour and celebrate the life of a man whose music touched countless lives across Ghana and beyond.

The family was received by management of Multimedia Group Limited led by Senior Editor, Special Assignments, Christian Amoadu Ohene, Adom FM Programmes Manager, Joshua Tigo, and Adom News Assisting Editor, Ernest Adu Kumi.

Known for his deeply spiritual songs and enduring presence in the gospel scene, Yaw Sarpong leaves behind a legacy that continues to resonate with many.

The family announced that wake-keeping will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, followed by a lying in state on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Asuofua Town Park.

Speaking on Badwam TV on Adom TV, he noted that unreliable electricity supply is now affecting individuals who rely on electric cars and motorbikes.

According to him, some electric vehicle owners have been forced to resort to alternative charging options, including power banks, due to the inability to access stable electricity.

“People who own electric cars and motors are now buying power banks to charge them because there’s no light where they are supposed to charge,” he said.

Mr Nartey explained that the situation reflects the broader impact of power outages on daily life and innovation, stressing that consistent electricity supply is essential to support modern systems and technologies.

“Even electric vehicle users are now struggling because of the power outages,” he added.

Speaking on Badwam TV on Adom TV, he noted that energy consumption has significantly increased over the years due to changing lifestyles.

Citing his constituency, Akrofuom, as an example, he explained that about two decades ago, very few households used air conditioners.

According to him, the situation has changed drastically today, with more homes now relying on air conditioners than fans.

“Twenty years ago, no house in my constituency was using air condition, but today more houses are using ACs than fans,” he said.

Mr Azumah added that the widespread use of modern electrical appliances is placing a heavy burden on the country’s energy system.

He indicated that the surge in demand must be taken into account when addressing the current power challenges.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Asante identified her alleged attackers as the Ashanti Regional NDC Women’s Organiser, Gloria Huze, the Ejisu Constituency Chairman, the Organiser, and the Youth Organiser.

The MCE claimed the four individuals attacked her unprovoked on Monday, April 27, 2026, over an alleged warehouse break-in involving party executives.

“These constituency executives were the same people who led the youth to lock down the NHIA office. They all wanted the MCE position and didn’t get it, so they have vowed to frustrate me. They have leased out some lands to people and were even summoned to the palace. Their argument was that the NPP did it while in power and they will also do it,” she claimed.

Madam Asante, while condemning the incident, cautioned against division in the municipality and within the party, stating that this is not the first time an MCE’s efforts have been frustrated.

“It is important for us to reach a consensus with the chiefs because they are the custodians of the and even if they need a parcel of land for something, they have to involve me to ensure calm and order at all levels.

“They always create confusion and cause apathy among party members. They fight every MCE appointed in the area but I have decided not to pay attention to anything they are doing to ensure peace,” she added.

Speaking on Badwam TV on Adom TV, he noted that electricity remains a critical national asset that supports businesses and improves the quality of life of citizens.

According to him, no government would intentionally create a situation that undermines such an important sector.

“It is not the wish of any government to create challenges for its citizens through power outages,” he said.

Mr Twum-Barimah explained that the power sector relies heavily on machinery, which is prone to faults and requires maintenance, leading to occasional disruptions.

He added that some of the challenges are also caused by human negligence or recklessness within the system.

He, however, acknowledged that power outages have real consequences for individuals and businesses, stressing the need to address the underlying issues.

Brogya Genfi clarifies claims military land has been handed to Ibrahim Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/brogya-genfi-clarifies-claims-military-land-has-been-handed-to-ibrahim-mahama/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 10:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656800 The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has dismissed claims that military lands have been handed over to Ibrahim Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama, for private development.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Mr Genfi described the reports as “false and malicious,” insisting they do not reflect the reality of what is taking place.

“I wish to firmly dismiss and ignore any false and malicious reports suggesting that military lands have been given to the President’s brother to develop. That story is completely untrue,” he stated.

He explained that the project in question is a redevelopment initiative by the Ghana Armed Forces aimed at replacing ageing infrastructure at Burma Camp.

According to him, many of the existing facilities date back to the colonial era and are now in a deteriorating state, making redevelopment necessary.

Mr Genfi clarified that the initiative is being driven through a self-help housing programme, with support from private individuals and organisations, including Mr Mahama.

He revealed that the businessman, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Dzata Group Holding Limited, has contributed significantly to the project.

“In support of this noble initiative, Mr Ibrahim Mahama has generously donated GHC120 million as part of the replacement programme,” he said.

The donation was announced during a fundraising luncheon held at the Ghana Military Academy, which was chaired by Sam Jonah and attended by corporate leaders and partners of the armed forces.

Mr Genfi described the contribution as a patriotic gesture that will have a direct impact on the welfare of military personnel.

“His contribution will directly improve the welfare of our gallant men and women in uniform, who sacrifice daily for the peace and security of our nation,” he added.

Calls for Energy Minister’s resignation needless – Richmond Rockson https://www.adomonline.com/calls-for-energy-ministers-resignation-needless-richmond-rockson/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 10:19:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656819 The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has pushed back against calls for the resignation of its sector minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, describing the demands as unjustified and politically motivated.

The Minority in Parliament had earlier called for the Minister to step down on Tuesday, April 28, citing persistent challenges in the energy sector, particularly recent power outages in parts of the country. According to them, the intermittent electricity supply reflects leadership shortcomings that warrant his removal.

However, the Ministry insists that the narrative does not reflect the full picture, arguing that significant progress has been made in stabilising the sector and addressing long-standing issues inherited from the previous administration.

Speaking on Citi FM, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, defended the Minister’s performance, pointing to what he described as measurable gains under his leadership.

He said government has worked consistently to increase generation capacity, maintain relative stability in power supply, and tackle the sector’s financial challenges.

“For somebody who has kept the lights on 12 months of no-load shedding, is he somebody you describe as a failure?” he questioned.

He also highlighted efforts to settle debts within the sector, which he said have helped restore confidence among utility providers and attract new projects.

“For somebody who has kept paying debt, who has kept faith with utility companies and then, due to that, they are bringing more projects, is that the person you describe as such?” he added.

Mr Rockson further urged the public to rely on industry data rather than political commentary.

“Read the press release by the utility company. After the government paid $1.47 billion, please read the press release. And then listen to what the industry is saying, and not what the so-called politicians are saying, but what the industry is saying about Dr. Jinapor.”

Minority calls for Energy Minister’s removal over power challenges https://www.adomonline.com/minority-calls-for-energy-ministers-removal-over-power-challenges/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 09:49:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656813 The Minority in Parliament has renewed calls for the removal of the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, arguing that ultimate responsibility for Ghana’s ongoing power challenges lies at the top of the sector’s leadership.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Member of Parliament for Oforikrom and a member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, said recent leadership changes within key power sector institutions, including the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), do not address the root causes of the country’s intermittent power supply.

He argued that while officials at lower levels have been reshuffled or suspended, such measures fail to resolve the structural and financial difficulties confronting the energy sector.

“If you remove the MD of GRIDCo and even direct supply at ECG, then why not you? Because the buck stops at the top,” he said.

His remarks follow a directive from the Energy and Green Transition Minister asking the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited, Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside pending investigations into the fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre. The incident has contributed to disruptions in the electricity supply in parts of the country.

Mr Aidoo accused the government of focusing on dismissals at the operational level as a way of managing public pressure, rather than addressing deeper challenges within power generation and distribution.

He further cited fuel supply constraints, accumulated debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), and broader financial challenges as key factors driving instability in electricity supply.

Describing the situation as one of “desperation and deflection”, the Oforikrom MP maintained that the sector’s challenges require more than administrative reshuffling to resolve.

Three generation units restored after Akosombo substation fire — Energy Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/three-generation-units-restored-after-akosombo-substation-fire-energy-ministry/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 08:29:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656756 The Ministry of Energy has confirmed that recovery of the national power grid has reached a critical halfway point, with three out of six generation units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant now fully restored to service.

The breakthrough comes four days after a fire gutted the substation’s control room, an incident that significantly disrupted the nation’s power evacuation capacity and triggered emergency load management across several regions.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, revealed that the restoration of the third turbine has provided an immediate and substantial boost to electricity supply.

He said the technical team faced a crisis without precedent in Ghana’s energy sector, noting that the damage to the control room forced engineers to work under extreme pressure to find innovative ways to bypass destroyed infrastructure.

“The good news is that I can confirm to you that earlier today, the third unit came back on stream,” he stated in an interview with Citi FM, marking a 50% restoration of Akosombo’s generation capacity.

He praised the technical staff for their swift response, saying the speed of recovery reflects the expertise within the Volta River Authority and GRIDCo.

“You could see the zeal and enthusiasm in dealing with a problem that has never occurred in this country. About 50% of Akosombo’s capacity is now operational, and work is ongoing to restore the rest,” he added.

The Ministry also addressed growing political tensions over the crisis, with the Minority in Parliament calling for the dismissal of the Energy Minister over alleged incompetence. Officials, however, dismissed the calls as opportunistic, insisting the fire was an unpredictable technical failure.

They maintained that the progress made within 96 hours demonstrates effective crisis management and coordination.

With half of Akosombo’s capacity now feeding into the national grid, the Ministry expects a significant reduction in outages across parts of the Ashanti, Central and Tema regions.

Engineers are reportedly working on the fourth unit, with the goal of restoring full capacity and stabilising power supply by the end of the week.

Enrolment drops as sanitation crisis hits Nungua pre-school https://www.adomonline.com/enrolment-drops-as-sanitation-crisis-hits-nungua-pre-school/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 08:20:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656745 A worsening sanitation crisis in Nungua Mami, within the Krowor Municipal Assembly, has forced a drastic decline in enrolment at the Hope Early Learning Centre, raising concerns among residents and parents about the health and safety of young children in the area.

The pre-school, which previously catered to more than 100 pupils, now has only four children in attendance. According to residents, the sharp drop is directly linked to deteriorating environmental conditions around the facility.

Open defecation behind the school wall and a nearby refuse dump have created a persistent stench, making the environment uncomfortable and potentially hazardous for both pupils and staff.

Teachers at the school say repeated efforts to get authorities to intervene have yielded no results.

“We have reported the situation several times, but nothing has been done. The conditions are getting worse, and it’s affecting the children,” one teacher said.

Parents have also expressed fear over the potential health risks posed by the unsanitary environment.

“We are worried our children could fall sick at any time. Diseases like cholera, diarrhoea and malaria are real threats in this environment,” a concerned parent noted.

Residents and school authorities are now appealing to the Krowor Municipal Assembly to take urgent action to address the sanitation challenges before the situation forces the school to shut down completely.

Gunmen allegedly storm Akyem Pusupusu, fire shots and threaten chief https://www.adomonline.com/gunmen-allegedly-storm-akyem-pusupusu-fire-shots-and-threaten-chief/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 08:16:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656749 Tension is mounting in Akyem Pusupusu, a community near Asiakwa in the Abuakwa South Municipal District, after a group of suspected armed men reportedly stormed the area, fired gunshots, and allegedly threatened the life of the chief.

Residents say the attackers struck at night, throwing the community into fear as gunfire echoed across the area, forcing people to flee for safety. The group is also accused of destroying property and targeting key individuals within the community.

Speaking to Adom News, the Bretuo Abusuapanin of Akyem Pusupusu, Nana Kwame Oduro, revealed that this is the second such attack on the community.

“This is not the first time. They came at night, fired gunshots, and caused panic among residents,” he said.

The caretaker of the chief’s palace, Samuel Owusu Boadi, also confirmed that the palace was not spared.

“They fired gunshots at the palace and threatened the chief and other Nananom,” he disclosed, adding that fear has gripped the entire community.

The incident has since been reported to the Kyebi Divisional Police Command, the Eastern South Regional Police Command, and the Ofori Panin Fie.

According to residents, a similar attack occurred last year in Akyem Pusupusu, during which properties were destroyed, but no arrests were made despite the case being reported to the police.

However, in a new development, police have arrested four suspects believed to be connected to the latest attacks, which occurred over the weekend. The suspects have since been granted bail as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, residents remain on edge, calling for increased security presence to prevent further violence and to protect lives and property.

Banking sector rebounds as assets hit GH¢465bn – BoG Report https://www.adomonline.com/banking-sector-rebounds-as-assets-hit-gh%c2%a2465bn-bog-report/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 08:13:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656741 Ghana’s banking sector is regaining momentum, with total industry assets climbing to GH¢465.4 billion as of February 2026, according to the Bank of Ghana (BoG)’s March Monetary Policy Report.

The figures point to a sector on firmer ground, reflecting stronger balance sheets and improved positioning within the domestic market.

Total assets grew by 21 per cent year-on-year. Although slower than last year’s pace, the growth signals a shift toward a more stable, sustainable expansion, driven largely by domestic asset accumulation and improving funding conditions.

A standout trend in the report is the increasing dominance of domestic assets. These now account for 93.8 per cent of total industry assets, up from 88 per cent a year earlier.

This highlights a stronger local focus by banks and reduced exposure to external shocks.

Investment activity played a central role in the sector’s growth. Total investments surged by 57.5 per cent to GH¢192.8 billion.

This was largely driven by a sharp increase in short-term instruments, which rose by 130.1 per cent, reflecting improved money market yields and more active liquidity management by banks.

Deposits continue to anchor the sector’s funding base. They rose by 18 per cent to GH¢338.5 billion, driven mainly by domestic inflows. This trend suggests growing public trust in the banking system as confidence steadily returns.

The sector’s capital position also strengthened significantly. Shareholders’ funds increased by 44.1 per cent to GH¢60.6 billion, supported by strong profitability and ongoing recapitalisation efforts.

Credit growth, however, slowed during the period. Analysts interpret this as a deliberate and cautious adjustment, with banks placing greater emphasis on asset quality and risk management amid a stabilising economic environment.

Overall, the data paint a picture of a banking sector that is not only expanding but doing so on stronger, more resilient fundamentals—placing it in a better position to support Ghana’s broader economic recovery.

According to police, a formal complaint was lodged on April 22, 2026, stating that the couple had been unreachable since March 23, 2026. The complainant indicated that the couple’s residence remained locked, while their Nissan Sunny was missing from the premises. Repeated efforts to contact them also proved unsuccessful.

Following the report, a joint team comprising personnel from the Missing Persons Unit, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, and the Crime Scene Management Team was deployed to investigate the case.

Police said the team has since visited the couple’s residence and followed several leads, resulting in the arrest of two suspects. The identities of the suspects have been withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The suspects are currently assisting police with investigations, as efforts intensify to locate the missing couple.

The police are appealing to the public to provide any credible information that could help trace Dr. Jesse Amuah and Mrs. Elizabeth Esi Amuah. Persons with relevant details are encouraged to report to the nearest police station for immediate action.

Family breaks silence on Konongo Odumase female teacher’s death https://www.adomonline.com/family-breaks-silence-on-konongo-odumase-female-teachers-death/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 18:30:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656645 An uncle of the late teacher at Konongo Odumase M/A Basic School, Grace Stepheny, has recounted the painful final moments leading to her sudden death.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Isaac Kumi said his niece showed no signs of illness before leaving home for school that morning.

“She was fine and left for school in the morning. We were here when a student and a teacher came to inform us that she had felt unwell at school,” he said.

According to him, the teacher complained of severe neck and throat pains upon arrival at school, prompting colleagues to rush her to a health facility.

“She complained of neck and throat pains; she was even crying, so one teacher took her to the hospital. I decided to join them there,” he narrated.

Mr Kumi said upon arrival, doctors confirmed that despite efforts to stabilise her, she had passed on.

“We got to the hospital and I met the doctor. He confirmed that my niece, Grace Stepheny, had been brought in, but they did all they could—she passed on. We saw her lying on a stretcher,” he said.

He added that the family initially held on to hope, delaying the transfer of the body to the morgue.

“The doctor even delayed taking her to the mortuary because we hoped things would change. It was around 2 p.m. that they finally called the mortuary workers,” he recounted.

Mr Kumi disclosed that medical staff indicated her condition was linked to high blood pressure.

“The nurses said when she came, her pressure was high. They were monitoring her and engaging her in conversation when she suddenly collapsed. They checked again and it was critically low,” he explained.

In a further twist, he revealed that another teacher, believed to be a close friend of the deceased, also passed away around the same time.

“It was later we heard another teacher had passed on. I learnt they were good friends,” he said.

He noted that the second deceased had reportedly been unwell for over a month and was receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The deaths have left the Konongo Odumase community in shock, as colleagues and family struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.

Assemblies to be surcharged as gov’t cracks down on illegal billboards https://www.adomonline.com/assemblies-to-be-surcharged-as-govt-cracks-down-on-illegal-billboards/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 18:27:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656636 The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has signalled a tougher stance against the growing spread of unauthorised billboards and signages, warning that assemblies that fail to act will face financial penalties.

During an inspection tour of affected areas in Accra, the Deputy Minister, Rita Naa Odeley Sowah, announced that non-compliant assemblies will be surcharged as part of efforts to enforce regulations and restore order in the country’s urban spaces.

The exercise, carried out with a technical committee dedicated to sanitising the cityscape, forms part of a broader initiative to improve the visual environment and ensure safer, well-organised communities.

Officials say the unchecked rise of illegal billboards has contributed to visual clutter, safety concerns, and a breakdown in regulatory control.

Madam Sowah stressed that assemblies have a clear mandate to enforce existing rules and ensure that only approved structures are permitted. She cautioned that failure to fulfil this responsibility will not be tolerated, underscoring the government’s commitment to discipline and accountability.

Supporting the move, the Executive Director of the Advertisers Association of Ghana, Isaac Cudjoe, called for sustained momentum in the campaign against unauthorised structures.

He noted that consistent enforcement is key to preserving the integrity of public spaces while promoting compliance within the advertising industry.

Similarly, the President of the Ghana Institute of Planners, Percy Anaab Bukari, urged metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies to engage qualified planning professionals in their work.

He emphasised that leveraging the expertise of trained planners will strengthen development control, ensuring cities are managed in a more structured, sustainable, and professional manner.

Together, stakeholders believe these measures will help create cleaner, safer, and more orderly urban environments while reinforcing respect for planning regulations.

Afienya demolition: Victims demand probe into alleged unlawful exercise https://www.adomonline.com/afienya-demolition-victims-demand-probe-into-alleged-unlawful-exercise/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 18:24:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656627 Victims of the recent demolition at Ashaiman–Afienya are calling on the government to investigate what they describe as an unlawful operation allegedly led by the Director of Special Operations at National Security, Richard Jakpa.

The demolition is believed to be part of ongoing works on the Tema–Afienya–Akosombo road project, but affected residents insist the process was poorly handled.

They told Adom News they are struggling to understand the basis for the exercise, insisting their properties were not within the demarcated area marked by engineers and relevant authorities.

They claim that, without prior notice, military personnel stormed the area and began demolishing multi-storey buildings, including offices, a hospital, pharmacies, and a school.

The victims are questioning why private properties were pulled down without any form of communication or warning.

Among those affected are the owners of Senes Pharmacy and College, whose multi-purpose building was completely destroyed.

Some victims have directly accused National Security operatives, allegedly led by Mr Jakpa, of carrying out the demolitions, and are now demanding answers from the government and accountability for the losses incurred.

Occasional Kwatriot Kwesi Yankah writes: Weep not Julius, mourn your dying nation https://www.adomonline.com/occasional-kwatriot-kwesi-yankah-writes-weep-not-julius-mourn-your-dying-nation/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 16:33:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656605 In the past few days, weeping has made headlines beyond funerals: ‘Wife slaps cheating husband to tears,’ or ‘Kejetia Market in Flames, traders in tears.’ Of higher news value are celebrity tears, where the journalist is even compelled to add the expression,‘ wept uncontrollably.’

Here the big man himself may have been caught weeping (maa maa maa) like a baby.

Men’s tears at women’s funeral are often unknown except for widowers, whom custom permits to shed a few tears to appease relations of the dearly departed. A widower’s dry eyes could raise suspicion.

‘Barima Nsu,’ (A real man avoids tears) is often the standard consolation by women who rather seek to arouse an overflow from men with stony eyes.

Whatever you do however, please avoid crocodile tears or else you may be whisked away to Paga for verification. Remember the famous crocodile pond which I visited in 2017 while on a formal visit to Bolgatanga Polytechnic (now University).

I did so partly with the eyes of a tourist, but also out of curiosity to witness crocodile tears. Were the tears of Debrah borrowed from Paga reptiles?

The problem with Julius Debrah is indeed shedding somebody’s tears in her absence. Dr Debrah seemed to say, “I do hereby weep uncontrollably on behalf of the CEO of Free Zones Board who made that offensive utterance, but has been unwilling to cry. I hereby wear her eyeballs to weep.” Julius seemed to be saying at his 60th birthday key soap concert.

Seeing a big man publicly cry in a celebratory garment is rare. In truth, though Julius refused to let bygones be bygones. His Government currently grappling with a reset agenda knows the political implications of offending a church leader who had millions of following. Votes in Election 2028 may indeed flee ‘Pentecostally’ if damage caused is not swiftly controlled. The public tears of Julius Debrah, a likely contestant for the presidency, thus had the trappings of Paga reptiles; but it was meant to seal the deal and clear the path for a presidency he eyes.

Very few however stop to ask the genesis of all this drama. On 22nd April, Apostle Dr Nyamekye, Chairman of Church of Pentecost in his State of the Church address lamented how polluted rivers had adversely affected Christian baptism in mining communities.

Within a day of two of this, the CEO of the free Zones Board issued a rather combative rebuttal: ‘If the church leader continues to behave like a politician, we will deal with him as a politician.’

The negative public uproar to this, across the country compelled the Chief of staff to quickly transform his 60th Birthday into a tearful anniversary, where he apologized profusely. But tears of a chief of staff would have been more patriotic if they were in response to the nation’s wider tragedy. Consider this excerpt from a viral essay by Tony Asare:

‘From Bekwai through Brofoyedru, Ofoase Ayirebi, to Oda to Nsawam and back to Accra; every single one was the color of clay. Thick. Dying, Poisoned. Dead. Shame. This is not water. This is running mercury, cyanide, and the fluid corpse of a nation flowing into the sea. Galamsey has won. Ghana has lost the fight.’

It is such a tragedy that qualifies to move a Chief of Staff to public tears, not a CEO’s imprudent rebuttal to wise words.

Please read also a recent letter by the Pediatric Society of Ghana addressed to His Excellency the President, lamenting a nation’s assault on her children. An excerpt:

‘Pre-natal exposure to mercury is associated with irreversible brain damage…It increases the burden of chronic diseases, infections and malnutrition of children. Galamsey isn’t just an environmental problem; it is a slow assault on the Ghanaian child…’

Julius, this is what should draw tears from you and the staff you lead. Your Boss indeed confesses that some of your staff are complicit in the assault on Ghana. Julius, weep Not for rude CEOs.

Cry for Mother Ghana:

‘The fluid corpse of a nation flowing into the sea.’

Current power outages cannot be described as ‘dumsor’ — Hopeson Adorye https://www.adomonline.com/current-power-outages-cannot-be-described-as-dumsor-hopeson-adorye/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 16:26:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656574 The Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has stated that the current power outages being experienced across the country should not be described as “dumsor.”

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, he explained that the term “dumsor” historically referred to prolonged and predictable power cuts.

According to him, during the period widely described as dumsor, electricity outages were often scheduled and, in some cases, lasted for several days.

“We cannot describe this situation as dumsor because dumsor was when you could predict outages and sometimes stay without light for two or three days,” he said.

Mr. Adorye noted that the current outages are largely linked to maintenance works, particularly the replacement of weak and overloaded transformers.

He explained that in such situations, power must be temporarily switched off to allow for the necessary upgrades to be carried out.

He expressed support for the ongoing efforts, stating that the maintenance works are necessary to improve the stability of the power supply.

Chamber of Construction Industry sends SoS message to gov’t over Big Push https://www.adomonline.com/chamber-of-construction-industry-sends-sos-message-to-govt-over-big-push/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 16:04:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656477 The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamber of Construction Industry, Emmanuel Cherry, has revealed that contractors working on inherited road projects under the government’s flagship Big Push initiative are facing delays in payment, despite assurances of improved funding mechanisms.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Cherry acknowledged that the policy framework of the Big Push programme appears sound, particularly with regard to newly awarded contracts.

However, he stressed that contractors handling older, repackaged projects continue to experience financial strain due to delayed payments.

“Sincerely, when we talk about the Big Push, the Minister is right that money has been made available for payment of all the projects. Within a period of one month maximum, if you raise a certificate, it will be funded. That is a plus on the Big Push Programme,” he stated.

Despite this, Cherry pointed to a growing disparity between newly initiated projects and inherited ones that have been absorbed into the programme.

According to him, while contractors executing fresh Big Push contracts are being paid promptly upon certification of completed work, those working on legacy projects are struggling to receive payment.

“For some of the inherited projects that have been repackaged and migrated into the Big Push, the payment is not forthcoming. Information reaching us indicates that most of them are struggling to get payment,” he revealed.

He explained that the situation is creating uncertainty within the construction sector, particularly for contractors who had already committed resources to projects before their transition into the Big Push framework.

“The new Big Push contracts have been paid once you are done with your work and you raise the certificate, except when you do shoddy work. That is where the challenge is,” Cherry added.

The Chamber, he noted, is seeking urgent engagement with the Roads and Highways Minister, who is currently on a nationwide tour inspecting projects, to address the situation and push for clearer payment structures.

“The Minister is currently on a tour inspecting projects, so we would engage him when he returns so we find ways to see how best contractors can be paid because we need clarity,” he said.

Cherry emphasised the need for fairness and inclusivity in the implementation of the initiative, urging government to ensure that contractors handling inherited projects are not sidelined.

“We are all Ghanaian professionals and must be treated fairly because we are all interested in the upgrade of our roads,” he stressed.

Sammi Awuku demands accountability over GH¢1 Dumsor Levy https://www.adomonline.com/sammi-awuku-demands-accountability-over-gh1-dumsor-levy/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:46:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656524 The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has accused the government of failing to account for proceeds from the GH¢1 “dumsor levy” on fuel.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, he alleged that since the levy was approved by the Parliament of Ghana, there has been no proper accountability to lawmakers or the public.

According to him, a significant portion of revenue from fuel purchases is being collected under the levy, yet details on how the funds are being managed remain unclear.

“When you buy fuel worth GH¢1,000, about GH¢83 goes to the government, and they have not accounted for it,” he claimed.

Mr. Awuku further questioned where the funds are being kept and who is responsible for managing them, stating that no official report has been presented to Parliament since the levy was introduced.

He maintained that the government has been collecting the funds without transparency, describing the situation as a failure of accountability.

Speaking on UTV in Accra, he maintained that the NPP left behind a stable power sector, despite occasional challenges during their time in office.

According to him, while there were instances of power interruptions over the years, the government consistently focused on resolving them rather than making excuses.

“I’m not saying there were no outages in the eight years, but we always found solutions instead of excuses,” he said.

Mr Awuku expressed concern over the current power situation, noting that it is having serious effects on livelihoods and education.

He explained that businesses, especially small-scale ones, are being negatively impacted, while students preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination are also facing challenges due to unreliable electricity supply.

He added that parents are increasingly worried as their children struggle to study in the absence of stable power, even as examinations approach.

Mr Awuku stressed that the issue should not be politicised, urging government to treat the situation with urgency due to its implications for the future of young people.

Yaw Siki added that these early experiences contributed to some of the challenges he faced some years ago.

Chamber of Construction appeals to gov’t to clear GH₵7bn road fund arrears https://www.adomonline.com/chamber-of-construction-appeals-to-govt-to-clear-gh7bn-road-fund-arrears/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 11:57:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656428 The Chamber of Construction Industry is urging government to clear outstanding payments owed to contractors outside the Big Push Programme.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Emmanuel Cherry, more than GH₵7 billion remains unpaid to contractors under the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, leaving many in financial distress.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Cherry said although some progress has been made, the delays continue to strain contractors.

“When it comes to Road Trust Fund, we have a challenge in there. Over GH₵8.2 billion is owed to contractors but so far, a little above GH₵1 billion was paid between January and February. But the issue is once payment delays, interest is accrued on it.

“As of now, the government has promised to pay around GH₵1.6 billion and even though it is a good decision, it is still low. So, it is our plea that the government would increase it to around GH₵2.6 billion to reduce the pressure on the contractors because the amount is just a drop,” he stated.

He warned that partial payments could trigger wider economic repercussions, as contractors support entire value chains including banks, manufacturers, and service providers.

“This money will just be a drop, and people will hear that contractors have been paid, but not even a penny of this money will go into their pockets because they owe banks and once the money hits the account, it is deducted,” he said.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz, he stated that it would be impossible for his children to play his old secular songs at home.

“In my home, it can’t happen and it will never happen. We don’t play secular music,” he said.

According to him, his decision is influenced by his past experiences, noting that some of the content he consumed in the past negatively affected him.

He explained that he is intentional about controlling what is played on television and radio in his home to guide his children properly.

Yaw Siki added that his household is centered around gospel and inspirational content, with his wife often tuning in to radio stations that focus on such content.

He acknowledged that while some mainstream media content may be harmless, others can be misleading or corrupting, which is why they limit their exposure.

“I got corrupted by what I used to watch and listen to, so I’m raising my children differently.” he added

He said due to the difficulty in filtering all content, they prefer to stick to platforms that consistently provide gospel and uplifting material.

Government owes fuel suppliers about $200m – MP alleges https://www.adomonline.com/government-owes-fuel-suppliers-about-200m-mp-alleges/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 10:55:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656409 The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has alleged that government owes fuel suppliers nearly $200 million.

Speaking on Badwam on Adom TV, he said the claim is based on intelligence his side has gathered regarding the current state of the energy sector.

According to him, the outstanding debt to fuel suppliers is a key issue that requires urgent attention, as it has implications for the stability of power supply in the country.

“We have picked intelligence that this government owes fuel suppliers close to $200 million,” he stated.

Mr Adomako-Mensah further indicated that concerns over the debt are among the reasons his side has insisted on accountability regarding financial measures introduced in the energy sector.

He referenced a bill presented to Parliament by the National Democratic Congress, which he said required a report by March 31 on the implementation of a one-cedi levy on fuel.

He maintained that addressing the financial obligations within the energy sector is critical to resolving ongoing challenges.
