The Australian Government has named career diplomat Keara Shaw as its new High Commissioner to Ghana.
Ms Shaw will also serve as Australia’s non-resident representative to eight other West African countries: Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
The appointment was announced on Saturday, July 5, by Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong.
According to the Australian Government, Ghana is a key partner because of its relative stability and important leadership role in the West African region.
Senator Wong highlighted that relations between the two countries continue to strengthen, built on shared Commonwealth heritage and growing people-to-people ties.
She noted that Australia and Ghana are expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, mining, and climate-resilient agriculture, while also collaborating on peace and security initiatives across Africa.
Ms Shaw is an experienced officer with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She has previously served in Indonesia and Zimbabwe, and also acted as High Commissioner to Mauritius.
She succeeds Berenice Owen-Jones, who has served as Australia’s High Commissioner to Ghana since 2022. The Australian Government expressed gratitude to Ms Owen-Jones for her service and contribution to strengthening bilateral relations during her tenure.
Australia first reopened its High Commission in Accra in 2004, having previously maintained a diplomatic presence in Ghana from 1957 to 1985.
