A 17-year-old final year student of Achimota Senior High School has died after she was hit by a stray firecracker in Tema over the weekend.

The deceased, Lily Dzigbordi Asigbetse was some friends when the incident occurred.

According to reports, some people had been lighting illegal fireworks at the gathering to mark the new year when the explosion happened.

An aunty of the deceased confirmed this unfortunate incident to Adom News Thursday.

She said her niece was rushed to the Tema General hospital and was later referred to 37 Military hospital for medical attention.

However, she died the next day in spite of attempt by doctor to save her life.

Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer,  ASP Afia Tenge said some of the firecrackers have been banned from the country due to its massive explosive.

She said measures must be put in place to ensure they don’t cross the national borders, therefore urging the public to be aware of illegal products.

“The law bans importation, manufacturing, possession, and carriage of artillery and canister shells or balls, even the display of firecrackers. How would the public know all these things?

“To tackle the issue we have to tackle the dealers; especially, those who import them. Some of the products are approved but most of them are not.”
