The Deputy Minister of Communications, George Andah, says the government of Ghana has no intentions to get Chinese broadcaster, StarTimes, to manage the country’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network platform.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Wednesday, Mr Andah said StarTimes has been brought on to the project, solely, to enhance the platform and not to manage the DDT network.

The government has not signed any contract [and] government has no intentions to get StarTimes to manage the DTT network. Indeed, the DTT network is going to be managed by the Central Digital Transmission Company Limited (CDTC) which is going to be governed by a Seven-member Board,” he explained further” he said.

The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) had earlier called on the government to immediately end negotiations with StarTimes over Ghana’s Terrestrial Television (DTT) infrastructure.

According to GIBA, the project which aims at protecting broadcasting from interference must not be given to the foreign firm, which also owns a TV network in Ghana.

But a ‘shocked’ Mr Andah wondered why GIBA would misinform the public about the arrangements when indeed government had no intention to allow StarTimes to manage the country’s DDT network.

He called for calm, adding that government is committed to engaging GIBA on the way forward.
