Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central in the Greater Accra region, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie says calls for the return of former President Mahama to lead the NDC into the 2020 election are unnecessary.
Theophilus Tetteh Chaie’s comment follows plea by ten regional Chairmen of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) calling on former President John Dramani Mahama to consider the request of the teeming supporters of the party to contest the 2020 elections.
The ten regional chairmen also asked Mr Mahama to as a matter of urgency embark on a ‘Thank you’ tour across the country by expressing his appreciation to NDC members for supporting him during his tenure over the years.
Some members of NDC have been rooting for the return of the former President who was defeated by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2016 general elections.
A statement signed by the various chairmen of the party said the recommendation was made known to Mr Mahama during a meeting held on Thursday November 9, 2017 in Accra.
But Mr Tetteh Chaie sees the move as premature and unwarranted.
He described their calls as a misplaced priority and in a bad taste which should not come from regional chairmen.
The former MP said former President Mahama has what he takes to win any election on the ticket of the NDC thus did not need the support of the regional chairmen.
“I think the move is a misplaced priority because John Mahama has what it takes to win any election any day on the ticket of the NDC and so cannot be forced to contest. Their conduct is nothing to write home about” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen Thursday.
