Former Accra Hearts of Oak player, Bernard Don Bortey says Asamoah Gyan is not good enough to lead the Black Stars as captain.

Asamoah Gyan has been in the news for the wrong reasons after printing his picture on the Black Stars captain arm band after the team humiliated Ethiopia in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Many sports pundits and football fandom have  criticized the former Sunderland striker for his action.

However, according to Bortey, although the all-time leading scorer for the national team has a lot of experience, he lacks leadership skills.

“Asamoah Gyan and I started Black Stars the same day, so I think Asamoah Gyan has that much experience but I can say he is not a strong leader like Stephen Appiah.

“A strong leader should command them [teammates], he should tell them to do this and do that. If the team loses, all the blame will come to you and the coach.

Don Bortey urged Asamoah Gyan to leave up to expectation and take criticisms in good faith.

Asamoah Gyan is now the top scorer for Ghana after scoring the opener against Ethiopia on Sunday.

  1. Don Bortey, if u really did say this, then u are an idiot. U want him to go about shouting and directing professional players before u see his leadership skills? No wonder u are no longer what u used to be. As a pro player, u don’t need ur Captain to shout and direct u as to what to do. U claim u both joined the national team same day. Where are u now and where is Asamoah now? That’s the difference between u and him so please shut up.. He is inspirational to his players and coaches. Of course he cannot be inspirational to illiterate footballers like u who may not know your left from your right. Thank you
