Atletico Madrid are growing increasingly resigned to losing Arsenal target Thomas Partey this summer, according to reports.

The 27-year-old has cemented himself in Diego Simeone’s starting XI over the last three seasons – attracting interest from around Europe in the process.

And according to Spanish outlet Cope, some Atletico chiefs have “given up” on the Ghanaian.

The report also names Arsenal as the team most likely to capture his signature.

Atleti’s No5 came through the club’s academy, before making his debut in 2015 and going on to make 175 appearances to date.

Thomas primarily plays the role of regaining possession for his side, as well as carrying the ball and moving it nicely.

The Gunners’ interest in signing Partey is nothing new, and reports in Spain suggested that before the coronavirus crisis, the North Londoners were ready to stump up his £43.5million release clause.

Given the financial implications of the virus and impact on the market, limited funds could prove a stumbling block for the cash-strapped Gunners.

However, the Emirates camp is reportedly willing to turf out a number of big names – including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil – to make room for new arrivals like Partey.

The Gunners travel to Manchester City on Wednesday night as Mikel Arteta makes his first return to the Etihad since deciding to leave Pep Guardiola and Co and become Arsenal manager.
