The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects believed to be members of an armed robbery syndicate accused of terrorising residents in the Wa West District and the Wa Municipality.
The suspects were arrested after months of intelligence led operations, according to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
One of the suspects, Nasiru Abdul Rahman, 52, sustained injuries during the operation and died on arrival at the Upper West Regional Hospital.
The police said the circumstances surrounding his injuries were not immediately clear.
His body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The syndicate is accused of attacking and injuring victims with machetes before forcing them to disclose the PINs to their Mobile Money accounts.
The police said money was subsequently transferred from the accounts to accounts allegedly controlled by the robbers.
Investigations have linked the syndicate to a number of robbery incidents in the region, including attacks at Kpenateng Junction on August 1, Kulkpara Dapoha on June 19 and Kpenateng Community on June 15.
The police statement also listed an incident dated May 23, although the location was not clear in the document.
Another incident was recorded at Piisi Dapoha on March 27.
Police estimates indicate that about GH¢22,070 in cash was stolen directly from victims, while another GH¢3,274 was allegedly transferred through Mobile Money accounts.
Seven mobile phones recovered from the suspects are being examined as part of the investigation.
The arrested suspects, apart from the deceased, are Amadu Moro, 35; Adama Yussif, 40; Iddrissu Adama, 35; Korika Issaka, 20; and Zakaria Brigi, 21.
The police said Mr Yussif, Mr Moro and Nasiru Abdul Rahman were members of the gang linked to the robbery incidents.
Two other suspects allegedly connected to the syndicate are still at large.
They are Haruna, 30, described by the police as the gang’s armourer, and Amadu Mahamudu, 24, the son of the deceased suspect.
The police said efforts were ongoing to locate and arrest the two suspects.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, urged residents, particularly those in communities affected by the robberies, to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons and activities to the police.
He also appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist the police in locating the two suspects and preventing further robberies in the area.
