Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, has expressed concern over the challenges confronting the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), describing the situation as distressing for parents and students.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kyerematen acknowledged the impact of the Free SHS programme but questioned why families continue to face difficulties securing placements for their children.
“Look at our education sector. Even though we have Free SHS, it has helped to an extent. But how is it that we’re still struggling with CSSPS challenges?” he questioned.
He said he was particularly concerned about the frustration being experienced by parents who have made significant sacrifices to support their children through Junior High School (JHS).
“I am really pained. Look at how the parents are frustrated. A lot of them are from low-income backgrounds and have tried everything to see their child through JHS, and now they have to struggle with placement,” he said.
He further raised concerns over reports that some parents are being asked to pay money to secure placements for their children.
“People are now being asked to pay money. Are we even serious as a country?”
Mr Kyerematen also questioned the reliability of a system that was once widely associated with the phrase “computer, no lie”.
“Gone were the days we used to say, ‘Computer, no lie,’ but look at us now.”
He said the current challenges surrounding SHS placement require urgent attention, particularly because of the impact they have on families seeking to secure education for their children.
