Anti-galamsey operation: 23 arrested, 64 changfans seized in Western Region

In a continued effort to clamp down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 23 suspects during targeted, intelligence-led operations in the Western Region.

The operations, carried out in the Wassa Akropong District, led to the retrieval and disabling of about 64 mining equipment.

According to a police statement, the arrests were made along the Wassa Akropong–Japa–Dadieso road. The team also extended its operation to the Obeng Mining Group site at Wassa Japa, where 64 changfan machines were dismantled.

At Wassa Dominase, officers acted on intelligence about illegal mining activities near the GOIL and Energy Oil filling stations along the Agona Amenfi–Gyedua Kesse Junction road.

Seven changfan machines and washing boards were disabled, while three water pumping machines and a pickaxe were retrieved.

In a separate operation in Asankrangwa, the police responded to reports of illegal mining near the 1D1F building along the Asankra Saah–Asankra Kwabeng road. The team retrieved three water pumping machines and four motorbikes.

All 23 suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
