Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, has debunked claims that the recent shooting of some persons at Alavanyo Dzogbedze is as a result of the long-standing dispute between Alavanyo and Nkonya.

According to him, the incident was as a result of an alleged unprovoked attack on the military by some youth of the town, compelling the soldiers to return fire.

He explained that the military went to the community to “negotiate” with the chiefs to release a weapon they had seized from a police officer the youth had attacked hours before.

He explained that in the course of the negotiations, the youth cut electricity supply to the community and started shooting from bushes.

“There was a misunderstanding between some police officers and the youth of Alavanyo Dzogbedze which had nothing to do with Alavanyo and Nkonya clashes,” he explained.

“The issue was about the cultivation of Indian hemp. The police had gone there to set fire to the Indian hemp and stop the trafficking of arms and drugs and that was what resulted in the seizure of guns,” he added.

Two persons were, on Sunday, killed, following a crossfire shooting incident between some military men and the youth of Alavanyo Dzogbefeme in the Volta Region.

The exchange of fire resulted in the death of the two and injury of about eight persons.
