Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has thrown his full support behind the upcoming National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, a unifying event scheduled for July 1, 2025, aimed at fostering peace, gratitude, and national unity.
During a courtesy visit by the planning committee at his Nima residence, Mr. Akufo-Addo praised the initiative, which has been instituted by President John Dramani Mahama.
He described it as a meaningful and timely gesture that encourages all Ghanaians to come together in gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon the country.
“All of us have to support this initiative. It is clearly a worthwhile initiative that we have this one day where all of us come together to give thanks to the Almighty for the many, many blessings He has bestowed upon us,” he stated.
The former President emphasised the importance of civility, peace, and unity, especially in a country with a history of political turbulence.
Despite Ghana’s experiences with coups in the past, he noted with pride that the nation has managed to maintain its democratic path and avoid the civil wars that have afflicted many of its neighbours.
Although he will be unable to attend the event in person due to prior international commitments, the former President pledged his full moral and public support for the day.
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Chairman of the planning committee, who led the delegation expressed gratitude for his warm reception and strong endorsement.
“He welcomed us, endorsed the whole programme, and thanked the President for the great initiative. He commended us, and we are very grateful,” Mr. Ankrah noted.
Highlighting the spiritual significance of the day, Mr. Ankrah also revealed that Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson will be preaching the Holy Gospel during the Christian service, adding a sacred and symbolic weight to the occasion.
The event, backed by President Mahama, is envisioned as more than a religious gathering—it is a movement for healing, reconciliation, and national renewal.
With support from leaders across the political and religious spectrum, the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving promises to be a powerful moment of reflection and hope for all Ghanaians.
The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving will include a Christian prayer service at the State House forecourt in Accra at 8:00 AM, followed by a Muslim prayer session at the Ghana National Mosque at 12:30 PM.
Simultaneous events are expected to be held across the country, bringing together people of all faiths in a spirit of unity.
