African Political Parties Summit opens today in Accra

The 2025 African Political Parties Summit has opened at the Accra International Conference Centre, drawing political leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Africa and the Caribbean.

Billed as the largest gathering of its kind, the three-day event — running from August 12 to 14 — will provide a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas aimed at strengthening democratic governance and political cooperation on the continent.

Delegates will discuss issues including regional integration, peace and security, inclusive governance, sustainable economic growth, and the role of political parties in advancing Africa’s development agenda.

Notable participants include President John Dramani Mahama, Vice-President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, President of São Tomé and Príncipe H.E. Carlos Vila Nova, and Vice-President of Liberia H.E. Jeremiah Koung. Civil society representatives and party officials from across Africa and the Caribbean are also in attendance.

Organisers say the summit seeks to foster inter-party dialogue, strengthen continental solidarity, and build consensus on shared priorities, while addressing cross-border challenges such as climate change, migration, and public health.

A final communiqué outlining agreed resolutions and action points will be issued at the close of the summit, forming part of efforts to advance the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
