Effutu Member of Parliament (MP) Alexander Afenyo-Markin has opened up about his long-standing friendship with former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, highlighting financial support and collaborative community initiatives.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, the Minority Leader revealed that Mr. Agyapong invested $5 million in his business without any formal contract, describing the gesture as a personal risk rooted in trust and friendship.
“When my business ran down, Kennedy gave me $5 million; we didn’t sign any agreement. He took a risk on me by giving me that money. We’re more than a family; there’s a history to it. It’s not right to cut the relationship. It’s a relationship we have. If he won in Winneba, so what? People should stop it; we have moved past that,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin added that Kennedy had also contributed vehicles to support various constituency projects.
He further disclosed plans to construct an ICT facility in Mr. Agyapong’s honour, a project conceived five years ago, underscoring their ongoing collaboration and mutual respect.
“I’m constructing an ICT facility, which, being named after him, was conceived five years ago; it’s a big project,” he stated.
He also commented on the attention Kennedy Agyapong received after polling 644 votes in the NPP presidential primary, compared to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 79 votes.
Some observers suggested that, although Afenyo-Markin did not publicly campaign for Agyapong, he may have influenced the outcome in his constituency.
Explaining the result, Afenyo-Markin said the large margin was not surprising, given the years of initiatives and support provided to constituents.
