The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Albert Dakurah, has called on residents to participate regularly in communal labour to improve sanitation and prevent disease outbreaks.
He made the call during a district-led clean-up exercise at Kojo Nkwanta, where residents and officials desilted and cleared choked gutters as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation.
Speaking to Adom News, Mr Dakurah urged assembly members to organise regular clean-up exercises in their communities, suggesting a fortnightly schedule to sustain sanitation improvements.
He also reminded residents of the district’s sanitation by-laws, which prohibit indiscriminate disposal of waste and non-participation in organised communal sanitation exercises.
According to him, maintaining clean communities requires the collective efforts of residents, traditional authorities and the local assembly.
Some residents of Kojo Nkwanta, however, raised concerns about portions of the drainage system, saying poor construction in some areas has resulted in stagnant water.
They said the stagnant water could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase the risk of disease outbreaks if the situation is not addressed.
Residents living close to the affected areas welcomed the assembly’s intervention and appealed for the clean-up exercises to be organised regularly.
They also called on the district assembly to provide additional waste bins to encourage proper waste disposal and reduce indiscriminate dumping in the community.
