The Accra Sports Stadium will not host competitive football until Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against The Gambia, National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has confirmed.
The Black Stars will begin their AFCON qualifying campaign with an away fixture against Ivory Coast on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.
Three days later, Ghana will return home to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in their first Group C home fixture.
The closure means Ghana Premier League clubs intending to use the Accra Sports Stadium as their home venue will have to find alternative facilities when the 2026/27 season begins this weekend.
Hearts of Oak are among the clubs expected to be affected by the decision.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah said the temporary closure is necessary to allow renovation and maintenance works to be carried out and ensure the facility meets standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“Ghana Premier League clubs or any other club that will play their home games at the Accra Sports Stadium must look for an alternative venue because the Accra Sports Stadium will not be in use until the Black Stars’ home game against The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“We will ensure the stadium is up to the standard set by CAF.”
The Black Stars will continue their qualifying campaign in November with back-to-back fixtures against Somalia before ending the group stage with matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in March 2027.
Ghana are seeking a return to the AFCON after failing to qualify for the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco.
The team will therefore begin its qualification bid with a challenging trip to Ivory Coast before hosting The Gambia in Accra.
